its a little over kill with the posts but it show the year range the these transmissions came in Saabs. not all Saabs used a similar trani, there are a few different actually.

Yes.... there are a half dozen Saab transmissions that will bolt up.... but from what I remember during my investigations the linkage and mounts were a bit different (making it hard to mate up to a woo )

It's not impossible.... but not the easiest job in the world.

I'm still about 50/50 about whether the mid nineties Saab 6spd tranny would mount up to our engine..... I've tried to get detailed pics for the last two years but they are somewhat rare.

I can't remember the exact year specification but there was a 6spd for about a year and a half that had a different part number than the ones found now adays ( Getrag F40 with mounting for Aluminum Ecotec )

For some reason I'm thinking it was the 2003 year and half of 2004.... which is when they changed over from the Saab made 2.0L turbo to the Opel/GM made Aluminum Ecotec.

Don't quote me on any of this..... it's been a long time since I was heavy into this research.

Needless to say..... the FM55 and the Auto which have our mount pattern were also found on the same engine with the 6spd ( special version... Saab 9-3 Viggen ?? )

Anyways........ I never did find a sample 6spd to compare..... Kenny (audacity) was working on it a year or two ago and he never had luck finding the right one either.

I even bought the Saab parts catalog and service manuals.... so I have the original part numbers..... but none of the pics in the parts manual or service manual showed the 6spd.... they basicly list the same pictures for the 5spd and 6spd.... so that makes me think they are also the same.

If you find a picture of the 93/94 6spd tranny that would be absolutely awesome.... it would finally put to rest the questions about compatibility.

There is still hope for the F40 tranny..... although we didn't get the right version in North America I have indeed confirmed (via digital pic from a fellow in the UK ) that they did make an F40 that was mated up to a Vectra Diesel engine.

If only we could get it here I would buy one or two..... there are guys on a fiero forum mating these F40's up to Corvette V8 engines.... they modify the mounting pattern then drop it into their Fiero!!!!

So if they can manage to take the power coming out of a high performance V8 I have to think they would be an awesome choice for our vehicles.

In the end Tom found me a great deal on an F28 that had recently been completly overhauled by SBD in the UK.... so I bought it and had it shipped over a few months ago.

i'll keep looking into the FM55, worst case i'll have to make custom mount brackets but thats no problem.

as for the F40, if i remember correctly, the tranni itself is the same from all the different engine applications they just use a bolt-on tranni adapter which means that we could alway have our own plate made and use the F40 from the Saturn, Saad... whichever we like.

if i can get solid info on the FM55 then the F40 might be an option just for the extra gear and not for the 'only' solution for a stronger tranni.

what about the F28???

Both Kinky and I have one... mine was put together by SBD and was previously owned by a rally guy

As far as the F40.... yes the version that is mated to the 3.0 V6 CDTI does fit our engine... but we don't have that engine here so we are SOL

All of the F40's over here are mated to the Saab aluminum ecotec engine or the 3.9L engine from the Pontiac G6

I do have pics of the Saab aluminum ecotec and it does appear to have the same mounting as the 3.9L...... so I'm about 80% the new saab F40's won't fit ours either.

I know for a fact that the ones for the 3.9L have a completely different mounting plate....you will see lots of pics on the fiero forum I posted below.

I've allready discussed the issue of getting the front portion of the F40 from Europe but the Vauxhall dealer said it's not a component you can order separately ( it has bearings in it )

The price I was quoted for a new F40 for the 3.0L was roughly 1800GBP..... and for that much I could pretty much get the whole front end of a Vectra Diesel with all the components needed to use the F40 in our car.

Now don't get me wrong.... it's by no means a drop in.... everything would need to be custom made.... even the drive axles.

I've done 100+ hours of research on the F40..... but so far I've not found anyone using it on the iron block 2.0L or 2.2L... everyone still grabs the F28 because they are cheaper.

here is one of the best resources for the F40 development..... even though they are planning on V6 and V8 engines for Fieros it's still a pile of good info.

http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/024804-34.html

Look for any of the articles by Archie.... he's awesome.

Have fun.... I droolled all over the place looking at some of these projects.

The FM55 is a 5spd........ the F28 that we brought in from the UK is the 6speed from the Calibra (both converted to 2wd)

The F28 is a bolt on 6spd that was found on the C20LET... when converted to 2wd it's known to last up into the 300whp+ range..... with possible handling up to 450whp if you treat it right.

Since mine was overhauled by SBD for rally racing it's probably about as good of an F28 as I could get..... so I don't think it will have a problem handling the 300whp I want to make from the C20GET.

I can't remember..... I belive I looked into the Hewland as well as a few other transmissions made by Quaife..... none would handle the power I want to make.

Many of the companies said I'd be ok with 400hp+ in a rally situation..... but definitly not for drag racing.

Basicly..... in rally the tires will spin before the tranny will break..... where as with drag slicks the tranny will have to absorb a pile of torque.

I was actually directed towards the 4T65-E automatic as the best bet for drag racing ( I'm told several of the top chev drag racers use it )
