Post by daewoomofo »

ok i have a 2001 Lanos, with out abs

i need new brake drums, but my problem is that i keep getting the wrong ones, i keep getting ones that have holes like this
(not these actuall ones, this is just an example pic, dont mind that it is a 5 lug pic)
Image
(there isnt any threaded part to recieve the lug bolts)
the drums aon my car are like this

Image
(it has the threads inside to recieve the lugs)

ive ordered 2 different sets of druns for my car (one from www.autobarn.com and one from 360 dynamics before they shut down)

i need help finding my drums, gm-car-parts.com has em but they are like $60 a piece. ive heard that i might actually have drums from a car with abs on my non-abs car, please any one help if you can

thanks in advance for your help

its another issue with lanos brakes... their are 2 setups for rear drums.

the first pic shows the setup i have on my car, you only need to remove the retaning screw and the drum is free to be removed off the hub assembly, the hub/axel/bearngs assembly is left intact... simple and effective setup i say.

the second setup as in the second pic is more complicated, you got no retaning screw whatsoever so in order to remove the drum you got to remove he center axel bolt and yank the drum including the axel bearings and rear seal off the axel to access the brake assembly.

no idea why daewoo descided to go with such setup 'cause it is too complicated and expensive to service... if you have to replace the rear drums and you got the second setup you will be forced to replace the rear bearings and seal as well, i don't suppose you will go into the hussle of removing the old bearings off the old drum to reuse them in the new drums plus you got to replace the seal anyways.

if you wanna know which setup you got, you just have to remove the rear wheel and look for the retaning screw... if you don't have it then you got the more complicated setup shown in the second pic... i am sure both drums got different P/N and they are not related to ABS as i have seen both setups on non ABS cars.

the reare wheel bearings are not pressed into the drum, they are free from it, like these

it is really easy to take them out. if you grease them when you take them out there should be no reason why you neeed to change them

my dear friend this is not the full bearing assebly.

their is kinda "outer ring" that the bearing roll inside... this part is pressed inside the hub or the drum depending on the setup you got so don't get fooled like me that the bearing in the pic is the only parts involved in a bearing setup.

i almost went to return my brand new rear bearings to the shop after i saw them with the covers... looked very different indeed to what i took off the rear axel - similar to the pic you posted - but my mechanic told me that this extra part is pressed into the hub and it is an essential part of the bearing setup.

so in a much shorter version: the bearings in the pic are not the whole bearing setup... the rest is pressed into the hub/drum assembly.

Well, you can also consider installing rear hub assembly from Pontiac Lemans. Its 4 bolts to remove it, and then you can re-use your existing hardware, and drums. Just a thought.

And there should be quite a few of them at your local scrapyard. All you need is the hub assy.. Good luck!
