you have the D-16 tramsmission. its the hydrollic versoin of the F-16 found in the pontiac lemans. the lanos sport has a different variation fo the D-16 in it, it has a close gear ratio.

I dont think your shifting right

In My Opinion you need to get in your car and hit the rev limit one time in each gear till you get the spot once you have it programed in your head you will see better shifting performance

I do

1st 29
2nd 49
3rd 73
4th 88 - 90
5th as high as 110 and never hit rev limit ( i wont go faster till I lower it so I know I cant kill myself )

well before i seen your post Slammed, i done:

1-29
2-45
3-72
4-90
5-109

but i know i do need to practice shifting better, i know my clutch is good, very responsive to pedal and distance from floor.etc. i just don't jknow how good my engine is and it seems to be sluggish when first get on the throttle and a long growl from the engine, quickly redlines. i havent done nothing to the engine besides service times and fuel filter/air. cleaned out tb.

I have the Lanos Sport with the manual transmission. I'll test it out tomorrow. I really want to see how it compares to the rest.

1- 28
2- 45
3- 75
4- 90
5- never pushed past 106.

1.5 SOHC with D16... not sure if it is a short ratio or not.

i really think my engine is really sluggish right now, which doesn't help performance.

do you mean that your car actually done an "engine brake" when shifting to 5th and went down from 120 to 90?? that is really odd.

Ok, I did a basic test today. I took the first three gears to about 6200 RPM (I have a tach). I would've tested 4th, but Clearwater is crawling with cops tonight and my cigarette lighter wiring is disconnected so I couldn't use my detector.

Basically, the max for the first three gears in the Lanos Sport 5-speed is:

1st - 25 mph
2nd - 50 mph
3rd - 78 mph

These numbers are pretty off of what everyone is averaging, so I guess that the Sport transmission really is geared differently. Woot.

yes it did do a "engine break" as you called it, i was doing as fast as i could on a bypass, but i couldn't redline it. and then when i shifted, it went straight down to 90, i was first like wtf, i didn't hit the rev limiter. and it didn't tear up anything, no grinding or hi revs, it was a little slower than 4th in speed but i could bring it up to about the same speed.

I guess the sport does has a little diffrently geared tranny, i wonder if i could put into my lanos, and color the door handles and mirrors, and voila, sport lanos.

You'd also need a full renovation of the interior, as the Sport uses leather interior as well as black plastic rather than gray for the trim parts. Its almost completely different from the regular Lanos.
