Will drilled and slotted rotors
Will drilled and slotted rotors really give a daily driver trouble? If I had to suddenly JAM on my brakes, would there be ANY differance? And I already know about the abnormal pad wear, because of the holes n slots... But, will it do anything bad besides that?
Keep it in your pants.

Drilled crack sometimes. I dont know how often under street conditions though

On a quality pair, it shouldn't be too bad, but if you skimp and buy rotors that aren't zinc plated, the holes/slots will rust and will eventually experience some pitting which will turn out to be very dangerous and prone to cracking.
However, if you get a nice plated set, and don't drive like a rally driver, it shouldn't pose any problems.
If you're still worried, just get a plain slotted set. It works the same.

slotted rotors are said to eat up pads 15% more than plane rotors.

guys don't be fooled into thinking that cross-drilled and slotted rotors are better. in fact, slotted rotors are antiques. they were designed for an older kind of brake pad that "out-gasses" when it got hot (that is to say it released a gas). the slots were used to scrape away this gas. with modern pads, there is no need for slotted rotors.
as for the cross-drilled rotors...
they too are pretty much pointless in any aggressive manuver. they were not originally meant to let gas escape or to cool the rotor (that's what the veins are for), they were meant as a way to improve acceleration by removing rotating mass. the fact of the matter is that they weaken rotors more than anything else. the one exception are the prosche "cast hole" rotors (as seen in my woo preview). these rotors have the holes cast into them so the metal is solid around them, not ripped apart on a molecular level by the drill.

Correct, brake pads now have a built in slot right in the center of the pad that is designed to release gases. It is already built into the pad so it doesn't jeapordize longevity and strength. If you really want good brakes, go with a big brake kit, but I have found that our Daewoos have excellent braking capabilities stock from the factory. Unless you are running high horsepower or drive circuit races, brake upgrades are a bit of a waste of money.
Granted, drilled/slotted rotors do look sweet.
Example of slots.

But dont some brake pads still create alot of gas? Like the carbon ones 360d sellsAudacityracing wrote:guys don't be fooled into thinking that cross-drilled and slotted rotors are better. in fact, slotted rotors are antiques. they were designed for an older kind of brake pad that "out-gasses" when it got hot (that is to say it released a gas). the slots were used to scrape away this gas. with modern pads, there is no need for slotted rotors.

nice info here guys... i got a couple of points to add:
1- on the OEM pads we got only one slot in the middle; will adding and extra slot or two help gas diffusion? or will it hurt the performance of the pads?
2- i am sure BosnianLanos is reffering to the 1.6 DOHC lanos brakes 'cause the brakes on the 1.5 SOHC is pathertic... just reacently found out that it is the same brakes setup used on the Matiz.

Yeah, I was talking about the brakes on the 1.6L. Compared to almost all of the other compact cars I drove ( 1999 Mazda Protege, 1994,2001,2003 Honda Civic,) and some bigger cars (2000 Volkswagen Passat, 2004 Toyota Camry, 2006 Volvo S40) the Lanos always ranks among the top of the heap when it comes to braking power. Thats why I said that I think brake upgrades on a Stock Lanos would be futile. It is probabally different on the 1.5L and the bigger Nubiras and Leganzas.MMamdouh wrote:nice info here guys... i got a couple of points to add:
