rear gear whit out the pullup?

Post by ooobiserooo »

Im planing if its possibe to cut the steal rod of the shifter to put a normal head. to do that i would remove the pullup. Lanos goes to the reverse when you pull the "pullup" it fits in the upper plastic part making the rear possible. AS I FIGURED?!

Questin is! If i would cut that plastic part would i be able to drive rear whitout problem?? Do all ya recomend this to be done whit out any problems to transmission or something else!

Thnx!

theoritically the pull up got nothing to do with the tranny itself so removing it will not affect the tranny.

in the practical world; removing the pull up makes you more subject to throwing in a reverse gear instead of 1st gear by accedent as it will be hard to diffrenciate between the 1st gear lane and reverse lane... thats why a pullup is their to prevent engaging reverse by mustake.

for me i wouldn't do that but thats just my 2 cents.

there is a little trick im willing to do hopefully soon,
remove the pullup, BUT ull have to make a small little mechanical switch custum made that if not pushed u cant let the gear go into the reverse position, but when u push it it moves out of the way of the reverse position and then u can shift it!
BUT TRUST ME NEVER! NEVER remove it with out making a saftey switch, i know a guy with an opel with a pullup reverse was going for a race and then he started off a jump on 5000 rpm and he put reverse instead of 1st
he messed up his gear box bad and needed a new one!
so beware

My former car had no safety mechanism to prevent me geting to reverse gear. Well. it had no pullup thing neither a switch but you had to press the stick left as geting into first, wait one second while doing a little force to the left, and then you could move it left a little more and then up into reverse. It was a confortable stick to tell the truth.

Anyway, the "switch" trick sounds bad to me if you have to leave the wheel to be able to press the switch. I have driven cars with absolutely no safety mechanism and all you have to do is to get used. It's easier than it seems.

i think maybe it is better to leave it on! but i have big fucking wish to buy a new head and look like i must save for expencive one! (fuc!<ing momo and their prices)
i also had idea to ask a glassman to make me one out of glass with precise sizes but the price he gave me based on size i draw it would cost half more! :(

Thnx all!

I found that all it takes is a little bit of modifying...

I bought a gear knob (a regular one, not a lift style) with the intention of finding a way to make it work...and it did.
I had to cut up the plastic bit that made up the lift reverse, put it on upside down and use the new knob i bought to hold it all in place.

All you really need is the piece that has to lift up to get it into reverse, the spring from that piece, and something to keep the spring from moving up when you lift.
You cant even tell it was modified except for the missing lifty thing... and when i put it in reverse, i have to use 2 hands and find the lifter under the cover :D (im yet to make a custom lifter, i plan on making one using steel rod, and curving it around to the front of the knob)
I may even get around to shortening the stick itself, so the order of parts would be:

Bottom-plastic lifter
Middle-spring
Top-Knob

Im at work at the moment so i cant really take any pics, but i should be able to later tonite

I have pics on my phone, but my bluetooth connector isnt working at the moment so i will have to transfer them tomorrow at work.
I have one pic of the original setup and one after i shortened the gear stick :)
To make the lift work after i shortened it, i used a metal washer and a plastic plumbing fitting thingy i found in the garage, so as you will see, its really not hard to get around the lift reverse problemo.

Ok im at work and i got pics...

Image
This one is the original setup i had with the aftermarket knob and retro fitted lift reverse.
Just ignore the feet....

Image
This is the current setup after shortening it by about 2 inches.
The spring is being held in place with a washer and a plastic plumbing fitting i found.

All the parts are being held on with the new gearknob.

lol I was just going to contribute to this thread. Thanks Kenny for remembering.

Well, I cut off 4 inches (about 10 cm) from the shifter. Obviously had to lose the reverse lock out mechanism. And NEVER (since the mod) have I confused 1st with reverse. You can EASILY distinguish which gear's which. Trust me.... and probably Nick will add something here to, since he doesn't have reverse lock out either and never had a problem.

So, definately go for it.

Here is my pic:
