I was fiddling around trying to find a formula to find out what speed you would be doing in each gear depending on the transmissions gear ratios.

I used the rolling diameter of the Lanos tires to be 22.7" so one revolution of the tire moves the car 1.8126 meters.

From that this is what I came up with :

Speed (km/h) = 706.91 / total ratio

For example...... in my Lanos 1.5L my second gear ratio = 2.048 and my final drive ratio is 4.19

Total ratio = 2.048 X 4.19 = 8.5811

So speed = 706.91 / 8.5611 = 82.36 Km/h

It's pretty close to what I've seen in my car so I think my formula is right.(or fairly close)

OK here are some of the numbers I came up with.... based upon gear ratio post by Maniac16v

D16 Wide Ratio (final drive 4.19 ) ----> 1.4L European Lanos
1st - 48 KPH
2nd - 86 KPH
3rd - 132 KPH
4th - 189 KPH
5th - 239 KPH

D16 Medium Ratio (final drive 4.19) -----> 1.5L Canadian Lanos
1st - 48 KPH
2nd - 82KPH
3rd - 125 KPH
4th - 174 KPH
5th - 221 KPH

D16 USA ( final drive 4.19) -----> 1.6L USA STD Lanos
1st - 48 KPH
2nd - 86 KPH
3rd - 132 KPH (has lower RPM in 3rd and 4th )
4th - 189 KPH ( for better fuel economy)
5th - 239 KPH

D16 USA (final drive 3.72 ) ------> 1.6L USA Sport Lanos
1st - 54KPH
2nd - 88 KPH
3rd - 129 KPH ( has more torque un 3rd and 4th )
4th - 168 KPH ( so that it feels sportier for passing)
5th - 215 KPH

F16
1st - 51 KPH
2nd - 92 KPH
3rd - 140 KPH
4th - 201 KPH
5th - 253 KPH

D20 ( if put into a Lanos )
1st - 56 KPH
2nd - 102 KPH (this is what I want.... 100+ KPH on 2/3 shift)
3rd - 135 KPH
4th - 154 KPH
5th - 225 KPH

F28 ( if put into a Lanos )
1st - 53 KPH
2nd - 88 KPH
3rd - 131 KPH
4th - 173 KPH
5th - 214 KPH
6th - 257 KPH

So do these D16 USA numbers sound right to you guys??

Can you check your RPM vs Speed to see if the formula/ratios are correct.

By the way these numbers only work with the stock tires ( 185/60-14)

The Quaife UK gear kits for the F20 range in ratios.

The closest ratio ( 5.18 final drive) gives

1st - 53 KPH
2nd - 77 KPH
3rd - 96 KPH
4th - 115 KPH
5th - 131 KPH or 142 KPH (with 0.958 5th gear)

The widest ratio ( 3.94 final drive ) gives

1st - 71 KPH
2nd - 102 KPH
3rd - 126 KPH
4th - 151 KPH
5th - 173 KPH or 187 KPH (with 0.958 5th gear)

They have four different final drives ( 3.94,4.20,4.85,5.18 )

I guess you could also use the factory final drives... 4.19,3.72,3.55,3.949

If you used the stock final drive from the D20 (3.55) with the quaife gears you would end up with the following....

1st - 78 KPH
2nd - 113 KPH
3rd - 140 KPH
4th - 167 KPH
5th - 190 KPH or 208 KPH (with 0.958 5th gear)

If you had 300 horsepower this might be the best ratio in order to make use of all that power.

On the other hand you could make your diameter of your tires larger to compensate and keep the close ratio.

these speeds listed by gear. at what "RPM" are they utilizing? 6000? 6500?

It was for 6500 RPM which is the rev limiter on my car.

As well I have a Suzuki Swift (same as Aveo) brochure.

It lists the following gear ratios....

1st --> 3.545 --> 50.6 KPH
2nd --> 1.952 --> 91.8 KPH
3rd --> 1.276 --> 141 KPH
4th --> 0.971 --> 185 KPH
5th --> 0.763 --> 235 KPH
Final Drive ratio --> 3.944

As well I took a good look at it and it looks like the suspension is the same but there are some differences in the engine.

Most specificly the engine mounts have been change to be like the Nubira where it's mount extends from the center of the timing belt cover

Some of the interior is the same and most of the car parts seem to be compatible with our lanos (at first glance)

the rev limiter on mine kicks in closer to 6000 or 6200

The RPM gauge on the new Swift (aka 2004 Lanos) has the redline at 6500RPM and I'm pretty sure mine makes it up to 6500 before cutoff ( I have the 1.5L SOHC)

The formula isn't exact...but even if you do it at 6000 RPM it should be within a couple of MPH of the numbers on the post.

Last night I checked at 6000 RPM in second and I was at 80KPH

According to my numbers (6500/6000)*80 = 87 KPH

So the formula might be a little off since it should have been 82KPH

Still....it gives a close estimate of what it should be and really helps to see the differences between the varous transmissions.

For example..... If you took a Canadian market D16 and put it into a USA 1.6L Lanos you would find that you would have better acceleration in the lower gears but 4th gear would be better in the D16 USA sport.

Basicly the lower the KPH the better for low horsepower motors (gives better accleration)

On the other hand I'm after higher KPH because I will have tripple the horsepower of a standard Lanos.

I just looked at the swift vs Lanos and they really made the gears wide so they must be trying for best fuel economy rather than acceleration.

I never took a good look at the tranny to identify it but given that the gear ratios and final drive are made up from other F16 and D16 transmissions I'd give it a 99% chance that it's 100% compatible with our Lanos Tranny.

1st gear (3.545) is shared with all F16/D16
2nd gear (1.952) is shared with F16, D16WR,D16 USA Std
3rd gear (1.276) is shared with F16, D16WR, D16 USA Std
4th gear (0.971) is shared with D16MR only
5th gear (0.763) is shared with D16MR only
Final drive (3.944) is shared with F16 only

I didn't compare the F20 to the other F16/D16 until now and I just noticed that all gears are exactly the same as the D16 USA Sport except for the final drive ratio ( F20 = 3.55 --- D16USA sport = 3.72 )

I guess that lays to rest the theory about the F16/D16 internal gears being compatible with the F20/D20

I know for a fact that the main shafts are the same so my only question is what difference there is between the F20 and F16

If they have the same mounts, shaft, gears what else is left.....perhaps the F20 just has a larger clutch than the F16.

GsiTurbo mentioned that there is another D20 version from Poland that has the same 1st to 5th gear ratios but has a 3.33 final drive ratio.

I do know the mounts are the same, also i bet the F20 is stronger than the F16 is... and of course another diference is the larger clutch.

my lanos 1.6 16v kicks:

1st.....nearly 70kph
2nd....100kph
3rd.....140kph
4th.....180kph
at 6500rpm


this after changing 200 speedo meter to a 220.
the old speedometre (200) was giving me:
1st....60kph
2nd...90kph
3rd...130kph
4rth..170kph
at 6500rpm

As to the Rev limiter Lanos actually kick at 6250, what we see at the tachometer is 6500, but it's not correct...

I cannot vouch for the D16/D20, but there are internal differences between the F16 and F20 gears, even though they may have the same ratios. We had a 2.0L 8V Mk2 Astra GTE which came with a F16CR box. We then swapped engines with a 16V XE engine and an F20 box, and we dismantled both boxes to put a 3.9 Final Drive from F16WR box into the F20. The layshafts in the F16 are smaller and the gears from the F20 cannot fit. Also some of the bearings are different. I read somewhere that if you change some of the bearing and take the ENTIRE gear assembly, it is possible to swap it, but I do not think you can mix and match.

If you look at the Quaife Close Ratio synch gear kit, you will see that it is compatible with the F18 or F20 box and NOT the F16.
