Thinking of putting a Honda Shifter in the Aveo

Post by Brian5475E »

I was thinkking about the crappy shifters in out "woos" well I thought why not put a cable style shifter in. So I'm gonna go to the local junkyard sat. and pull a shifter and cables from a civic. all you need is back and forth and in and out to select gears. I have to figure how hard it is to remove he shifter rod that goes through the firewall. Anyone ever remove one?

There are better and more established ways of improving shift feel. Check 360Dynamics for a short shifter. Good luck.

I'm not talking about a short shifter. I already made one of those. I'm talking about a accurate shifter. WHen shifting fast some times, I get jammed between 3rd and 5th gear. It's because the crappy linkage that Daewoo/Gm uses. use a cable and no problem

You misunderstand my statement. Short-shifters (if properly designed to so do) can improve accuracy and shift-feel. Case in point. To date Toyota makes the WORST manual shifters known to man. Sloppy, notchy and inaccurate. A friend of mine had a Toyota Levin that had a short-shifter kit in it. That is the ONLY Toyota that I have driven at speed that I did not snatch a gear during the shift from 2nd to 3rd. Anyway...I'm digressing. I shouldn't be cluttering your thread if I can't help you. Good luck bro.

if the aveo shifter is the same as a lanos then you can use the B&M short shofter form the cavalier i think 94 model. but then again i think the 360 one is just as good and half the price. the B&M one is like $200 or so.

A cable shifter would be a more accurate shifter. the Daeoo shifter set up still very unaccute when shifting fast, veru easy to jam between 3rd and 5th when trying to shift to 3rd. I'm not worrued about a short shifter.

On the contrary, cable shifters can be very inaccurate especially when rushed. The cable shifter in the VW Corrado was notorious for this sort of thing. Shift too fast and to hard and it would snatch. Most quality short shifters not only shorten gear lever throws but also have designs that facilitate more fluid movements. Notice also that the gear level mechanism in the Daewoo is not straight from the lever to the gearbox. It makes at least 3 turn to get to the gearbox. Cable shifter cannot make those turns.

in my experience a cable shifter has always felt less solid and much more vague than a conventional shifter. perhaps your technique is a bit off?
but if you can pull it off that would certainly be an interesting swap.

In all the time ive spent on the track in the last year ive only gotten stuck between gears once which happened to be my first road course event. I really dont see this as a valid problem. I know ive heard alot about the cable shifters being better--i dont know why. But if you want a cable instead because of the problem stated i dont think it'll help much

I'm not sure if you've manually shifted the linkage from inside the engine bay...... if not... go outside and try it..... I think your going to have a hell of a time setting up a cable system to move the shifter in the pattern required.

The Getrag transmissions are notorious for being notchy...... if your having problems finding gates.... the easier solution is to fabricate a gate plate ( like a ferrari ).... your shifter shaft will only be able to move within the cutouts in the plate.... no more missed shifts and it will feel very smooth and solid.

nice idea Erfinder... a shiny aluminum plate will look sexy, or you can use a carbon fiber one for racy look.

i would think a shift gate would be hard to fabricate for the daewoo family unless you swapped to a skinnier shaft for the gear shifter and removed the pull-up reverse. that mechanism is a really blocky and fat part, making a plate to accomodate it in each gear position would be hard, if not impossible!

plus measuring would be a pain in the butt
