Au torque rating are same as US just upside down :)

Sorry to burst your bubble...

Bottom end was built buy a guy who normally builds drag motors... I just asked for good torque as it being a front wheel drive supposed to be for rallying on dirt.

This day we just installed the LINK Computer and we found the clutch was slipping. Latter we have ran it upto 110Hp with a clutch replacement and now it would be closer to 120+Hp on race fuel and a few more tweaks running on the track with the laptop fine tuning it.

Let me preface my reply by stating I am a Dynojet Dynamometer owner and have been testing cars since 1998.

The mathematical formula for figuring HP from TQ is:

TQ*RPM/5250=HP

Assuming a peak torque rpm of approximately 4000, your 450lbs.ft at the wheels would be equivalent to 304whp at peak torque. Assuming your peak hp rpm is roughly 6500, the measured TQ just under 400lbs.ft. at that point would be equivalent to 482whp. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I know why the numbers are erroneous.

When dyno testing an engine with a waste-spark ignition system (coil packs where one coil drives two cylinders) it is very easy to mis-interpret the rpm signal. if they took the rpm signal off a spark plug using an inductive lead, the computer will be reading a spark every 90 crank degrees instead of 180deg. typical for a 4cyl. So the actual rpm will be misinterpreted to be HALF it's actual speed. This is why the measured tq is so high. A chassis dyno measures weight vs. speed vs. time. The amount of time it takes to accelerate the dyno drums to a given speed = measured HP. From that, TQ is calculated by the dyno computer using HP and RPM by recalculating the formula above to answer TQ: HP*5250/RPM=TQ.

If the measured RPM is not correct, as appears to be the case in your test, the TQ calculation will be incorrect. This is also why your printout has HP and TQ referenced by speed instead of rpm. The computer was unable to graph the test run due to fact that the numbers don't "add up". Due to mathematical constants, HP and TQ must be equal at 5250rpm. This is why your numbers defy logic and the computer could not graph it.

I am surprised the dyno testers didn't catch this error, unless they intended you to believe them capable of building a 450lb.ft. 2.0L engine. My turbocharged C20GET which uses the Daewoo head makes 245whp on 1Bar boost and the highest TQ I was able to measure (due to the automatic trans) was roughly 250lbs.ft. at 4600rpm. I know it makes more, but the trans will downshift if I try to pull it any lower. It probably makes 275-300lbs.ft. at 3500rpm.

I hope I didn't make you angry. Instead my intention is to inform you of the grievous error made on the part of the dyno operator in allowing you to believe these numbers. Not much you can do but to tell them you know they lied about it. IN orderto run a waste-spark 4cyl, they needed to have set the rpm scale for 8cyl.

Here is a dyno run for my turbo "Woo". Notice it is in perfect graph format (hp/tq/rpm) and hp and TQ cross at exactly 5250rpm.

BTW, might I say that 120whp is very impressive for a n/a Daewoo! The stock engine is rated at 130-135hp at the crank, which is only about 100whp. So the extra 20whp puts you in the 150hp range.

From what I've found is that Saab only used an F25 5sp which is not interchangable.

Information on the UK spec models

Post by Galahad »

Just to clarify some of the points made.

In the UK the 2.0 16v Turbo 4x4 with F28 was known as the Vauxhall Cavalier in the UK, and as the Opel Vectra in Europe. When the Vectra arrived in the UK, it didn't ever come with 4x4 and a Turbo.

The F25 gearbox as found in the Vauxhall Cavalier/Calibra V6 WILL fit engines that can have the F28 gearbox. The only difference is that because the F25 was only ever fitted to the V6 models in Europe, then the gearbox/engine mounts are specific to this combination of gearbox and engine because obviously a V6 is one cylinder less in width.

The other consideration is that the F25 gearbox was NEVER fitted with a speedo drive/cable (i.e. the speed was not read mechanically from the box), in all cases the speedometer on your dash needs to get the speed reading from the ABS sensors. If your Daewoos have ABS, one of those wires leading to the ABS unit itself will be one that sends out the speed signal.

The Saab V6 unit on cars of a similar age to the Opel/Vauxhalls is the same engine, and same gearbox, so theres more spares ;)

The only real problem with the F25 is that the gearing is a bit long. Its not so much of a problem when you put the V6 and F25 in a smaller car (Astra/Le Mans/Kadett), but when you put on an F20 or an F28, the shorter gearing gives much better ingear acceleration.

Having said that, using the 3.2 V6 with the F25 in a smaller car is absolutely fine :)

The early F28 gearboxes came with mechanical speedo drive, but the later ones operated the same as the F25.

If you're thinking of getting an F28, you'll want to do so quickly. These boxes were only ever fitted to the Vauxhall Cavalier/Calibra 2.0 16v 4x4 Turbo models and NOTHING else in the UK.

Cavalier Turbos are rarely broken up for spares because of their resale value, whereas the Calibra Turbo sold in far greater numbers and is regularly broken up.

As the gearbox was originally intended for a 4x4 car, you will need to get an adaptor kit to close off all the relevant 4x4 parts of the box.

Goof info Galahad. I am looking into buying a F28 box for my Optra from the UK. Its been a pain researching what needs to be done and what is compatible and not.

Make sure if you do buy an F28 box, that it comes with the F28 gear linkage, as these are specific to this gearbox.

I wish I could see what the linkage looked like.... I don't know if the box I'm looking at has the linkage. I was thinking I could just fab something to make it work with the stock optra linkage?

I have confirmed that certain year Saab 2.0L turbo engines did come with a tranny mounting pattern exactly identical to ours.

I have also confirmed that there was a 6spd with the 2.0L turbo in limited applications.

I have yet to actually see a mounting pattern for the Saab 6spd found in North America

I've even tried to purchase a 6spd from a Saab parts specialist but he said that they very rarely come up and they are worth quite a bit used.

I also have the Saab EPC but unfortunatly they simply show the same picture for both the 5spd and 6spd.

So in short..... I'm not entirely sure if it's technically an F28...... as the Saab part numbers are definitly different..... but it's possible that Getrag made Saab the same a nearly identical gearbox to that of the F28 ( so basicly just a different name on it )

I wish I could confirm the mounting pattern for the 6spd..... I have to find my notes..... the one I was looking for was mated to a very specific engine..... I think a model year 2004 Saab 9-3 was the correct version.... but I can't be sure at this moment

Ok..... found my post to my Saab autoparts guy....

> trannys

> Mid 2004 the part number changed to 55353729 ( FM67104)

I was quoted $2800 CDN for a used 6spd...... talk about crazy.... I paid less than that for my brand new M32 gearbox from an Astra VXR!!!!

Anyways..... if anyone finds one of these let me know.... I looked on Ebay for about three or four months straight..... never found one picture of the mounting side.

I kind of gave up at one point after I got my F28 and M32....... but I'm sure many of you guys would rather find something in north america than have to bring one in from the UK (even though they aren't that expensive most of the time)

At the time there wasn't all that much in the USA either..... and I certainly didn't want to spend a grand on a hunch.

I have sent this info about the Saab 6spd to a few guys on here to see if they would go to a local scrap yard and take a look at the mounting pattern (digital pictures ideally)

Unfortunatly I think most of them have forgot or couldn't be bothered.

I was reluctant to post the info on the Saab until I got some sort of confirmation but at this point I think it's better if everyone was involved.

At this point someone has to physically get a picture of the Saab 93 6spd

It's possible that out of the two part numbers only one of them will fit our car.... or it's possible neither will.... but I think there is a very good likelyhood that one of them will work

How about this...... I will give a $50 paypal reward to the first person that can get a digital picture of the mounting surface of one of these Saab 9-3 6spd transmissions showing the part number.

It absolutely must be a 6spd..... there are lots of guys that advertize a 6spd and show pics of one generic 5spd (which they use for all their sales )

So.... again.... digital picture of the part number combined with the mounting pattern .... first guy get's $50 and right to say "I found a Saab 6spd that fits our iron block ecotec engines"

Why is it so hard to find a damn picture of this gearbox sitting on a loor somewhere?

I found a pic of a 5spd from a 2001 Saab 9-3. But not a 6speed.
