Pull the pads/plates out, remove the backing plate and install the plates onto the new pads.

As for the housing not freely swinging up... there shouldn't be a problem.... perhaps you need to tap on the housing with a rubber mallet to move it.

Thanks. I picked up a set of the semi-metallic (the only ones that were in stock) yesterday and hope to escape work early tonight and try and install them. I am also going to pick up a set of jack stands and wheel chocks, just to be really safe. Trying to find someone who carries an air filter for the car is starting to get frustrating and I will probably just order one from an online store.
