AWD
I'm new to the whole AWD thing and i did a search but didnt find anything i was looking for, I have a 90 sunbird GT 2.0 turbo im swaping a daewoo DOHC head onto but after wards i was thinking of going AWD if i could get the tranny at a decent price.
Was the F28 ever available in South Africa? A buddy of mine travels down there every year i would be able to get him to pick me up one if they have them there and that would be great.
Other than the transmission what would be diffrent? would the shifter and shifter cables for my current 5 speed transmission work?
Also can anyone show me or direct me to some pictures or information of how the AWD system is set up on these cars, i've never seen one cause we dont have them here in canada, we did have a short lived pontiac 6000 with AWD but it was automatic and very hard to find, I saw one once in a wreckers but didnt get a good look at the suspension.
thanks in advance
sorry if some of this is asked alot, i couldnt find it anywere.

Dude....what you want is the entire drivertrain and gearbox from the Kadett Superboss. It was only sold in SA, with higher power than the-rest-of-the-world C20LET (it was up to 220bhp from 205), and factory fitted F28, factory converted to FWD.. Motor will mount right in, but you will need to fab (possibly) new gearbox mounts.
Actually since you are in Canada, get you get one F28 for me too?? I think Chris@precisionboost will take a handful too

Anyone know any sites i could go to to get more info on the Kadett Superboss? assuming you can get them in AWD.
Also why do i keep hearing of everyone swaping from AWD to FWD? whats wrong with th AWD system?
Anyways if the I need pictures of the suspenson and such of AWD cars to see how it mounts up to see how it will work in my application, might save me alot of fabrication. I know stuff like the Vauxhall Cavalier came AWD, but is there anything better?, im sure there is as i dont know my over seas cars that well.
I wanna use as much stuff from canada as i can so i dont have to ship so much over and also incase i break anything i dont have to wait until my buddy goes back down and back with my parts which coudl put my car off the road for almost a year if i ever broke anything he sent me.
I think i'll stick with my motor, i cant imagine the cost on shipping an entire engine over here

The rear of the unibody doesn't have the mounting or the reinforcement for AWD... so people who have a-frame rear ends (Lanos, Astra, etc) just steal the 6spd gearbox. I'm currently converting a Lanos to RWD and based on my professional observations and calculations, the unibody won't take the torque down the center of the car anyway. You would need to not only fabricate a rear sub-frame, but also a new gas tank location and body stiffening for the rear end. I'm not sure if you're contemplating doing this to a hatch or sedan, but be prepared for a whole mess of tubes to hold it all together.
Things you'll have to fabricate...
- Rear sub-frame
- Shock mounts
- Fuel tank
- Body mounts
- Suspension pickups
That's a really broad and not-so-detailed list.
I'd recommend you stick with a FWD setup unless you're in it for the long haul.

Guys
I aint to sure of the F number on the Super Boss gearbox, but it wasn't a 6 speed box. As far as i can remember it may have had an LSD. It came out STD with around 115 kW in Boss form (+-154bhp - naturally aspirated) but think it wound up around 125kW in Super Boss form (168bhp). It ran pretty hot Schrik cams that gave it a great lumpy idle. One of the members in our car club has one. check out Imran's Suppie on ......

The Astra and Kadett TS that was made here DID have the 6 speed box from the AWD but it ran FWD with an LS (but no AWD). The motor was the same as came in the UK's Calibra Turbo 4x4. Originally they made 160kW (215bhp) but after a year or so they backed it off to 150kW and upped the torque. +-200bhp
My mate has one of the original cars from 1994. His car is also featured on the above web site, along with my own Lanos.

the 200TS is the car that came with the c20let/f28 FWD. and it as also called Kadett but is a mk3 chasis (5 door if i remember correctly)
the SuperBoss (also called Supie) is a mk2 +-170hp C20XE (different cams/better engine map a homologation for a Group N i guess) only sold in south africa... the mk2 had various nicknames depending on the model (BOSS, BIG BOSS, SUPERBOSS)

I have no problems with that at all, I build stock cars here all year, fabing up a rear subframe is no big deal. I was planing on doing that anyways to have something to attach my mounts to for my lower control arms, shocks and differential, since im going from a solid axel rear to independant rear. The rear of the unibody doesn't have the mounting or the reinforcement for AWD...
Does anyone have a list of cars that came with this tranny is SA?
If i got a FWD F28 how hard is it to convert it over to an AWD tranny, is it just a matter of pulling the plug shoved in the rear drive shaft hole and putting a drive shaft in there or is it more in depth?
How strong are these trannsmissions, I'll be puting down a good amount of tourqe i dont want to destroy this after how much money i'm putting into just getting it here.
thanks

The TS (Made in both 5 door hatch = Kadet and normal 4 door saloon=Astra) was made in such limited numbers here that the gearboxes are like hen's teeth, i.e. you can't get hold of them at all. When they do become availble here, they sell for silly money.
