Impossible brake problem

Post by bluecube »

Hey everyone. I have been having a problem that maybe some of you could help me with.

Lately in my Cielo when I reverse in a straight line and then brake (not too hard, just normal) I hear this dull clunk as if someone hid the frame of the car with a blunt hammer or something (it sounds like its coming from the front right of the car, but it is hard to tell). I thought it may be a problem with the rotors and pads so I replaced both. This did stop the noise. But only for about 2 weeks. Then it has come back same as before. The clunk only happens when braking while reversing in a straight line. Strangely it does not make the noise as loud (sometimes not at all) when the wheels are in a turned position when I brake.

If anyone would help it would be great. I've tried everything I can think of.

P.S It does not make this noise any other time, only when reversing and braking.

Cheers

i'm thinking it might be a motor mount possibly. i knew this one guy with a honda where everytime he put his car in reverse the engine just dropped on him.

Hey,
I just checked the lowerer middle motor mount and everything appears to be fine. Bolts are still very tight and the rubber inside looks fine.
Its quite an embarrising problem because when reversing out of a park or something at the shops it goes clunk and everyone looks at you as if u reversed into another car :(

check your front suspension, a bad strut mount can cause that too

mounts will look OK even if they are busted... you got to yank the E brakes, put it in first gear then get a frind and tell him to try to move the car to the front for quite a few times then to the back a few times without stalling it of corse.

during that the brakes will put too much load on the engine and when that happens the engine will try to tilt... if the mounts are OK then the tilt will be minimal but if they are busted you will see the engine going forward or backward too much, also look at the mounts during that... the load will make then show any cracks or torn parts as well.

don't rule out suspension parts as well speciallu control arm bushings.

+1

Mounts will look very good and soft even though there is a big tear in them. They are designed to hold in the bulk of the engine even if they have failed.

I have the same problem as we speak, and 2/3 mounts are completely torn through

Thats next weeks project.
