Tranny filter change

Post by Comrade »

Got 55'000 miles on 98 Nubira.
Will be replacing leaky tranny pan gasket.
Is it a really big deal if I leave the old tranny fluid filter in it?

Now just got the new gasket.
Apparently lots of my old fluid leaked out and it was reving up when temperatures were dropping to the freezing.
Plus it was making ratteling noise when it was cold in the morning.
So I flashed it at 54'500 miles.

Now have to drop the pan again. What a waist of money. :)

You can get a tranny gasket kit with the gasket and filter for something like $25 in Autozone. The 4T40E transmission is a common American transmission that you can find parts for everywhere.

Yes, it is a good idea to change the filter with the gasket.

Dumped $100 for the tranny gasket at the dealer in Houston.
Will get the filter when I get home to Tulsa.
Then I'll take it to the Firestone do get it swaped.

I know, as I mentioned, I also got the kit for only $25.

The dealer wants $80+ for the gasket alone, granted it is rubber and the other cork, but still, it is worth it.

What do I ask for at the Autozone, they don't have the GM or Daewoo part number for it?

I can probably still return they gasket to the dealer and buy the kit for $25. :)

You can do a search online and find the part number, but you can pretty much go into Autozone and as for a Transmission Filter Kit for a Nubira. They'll have what you need. I asked for a Lanos and they had it.

If they can't find it, ask them to search for any car that has the 4T40-E GM transmission, they are really common.
