ECM Question

Post by RSZT4 »

hey guy, n00b to the forum. I have a 1989 sunbird 2.0L OHC , that im doing the DOHC head swap onto. I'm getting a DAEWOO Nubira 16V DOHC 2.0 engine to take parts from. Now at the moment I'm using the GM 7749 ecm with code59 on it. the engine is Distirbutor and once i swap over to the Nubira head it will be coil pack. So now that you guys have a little background. I have a few questions. I don't know enought about your cars, so here it is. What do you guys use for engine management systems? I know i can go MS, i can stay using the 7749. I was also looking into the stock ecm from your guys cars. If anyone could give me some pointers that would be awsome! thanks.

As an ex J-Body forum guy who was into the C20GET ( 2.0L 8V turbo from sunbird GT turbo ) I have some experience with this.... there are five of us on here that are very familiar with these engines (only three are regular posters )

The latest model 2.0L 8V came with a distributor-less ignition system ( 93/94 ??? ) so that might be a good bet.

I can't remember if that system was a MPFI or not.... it definitely wasn't a throttle body.... probably not sequential like the Nubira... I'm pretty sure it batch fired 1&4 then 2&3 because it didn't have the cam sensor like the Nubira 16V does.

I would not use the Nubira ECU if your planning to go turbo.... the factory sunbird ECU is easy to tune.

If your staying Naturally aspirated and not planning on doing too much in the way of tuning then it's a good ECU.

Megasquirt works good, search around for project superswift on this forum.... we dropped a C20GET into an Aveo with a Megasquirt for management.

It would help if I had more details from you as far as what you want to do with the engine performance wise.

haha nice! Im semi new to the OHC, i'm a LN2 guys really. but the 2.0 became DIS is 91...iirc. the 7749 batch firing system stock but can be changed to run on many different applications. Ok, the Nubira was just a option, im just looking around at the moment I will proably end up staying with the '7749 ecm , If i go N/A after i do the head swap, i might go to moates and get the S_AUJP v4 file and run that with the 7749. Tuning for me is a kinda must, I've rebuilt the entire engine from ground up and I'm just not happy with the performace that it has. So kinda why im doing the D-tech head swap. I guess i can let you guys in on what im doing since no one knows me here  .

Where the engine sits now.

PontiacJeff did the same swap.... he doesn't come on here much since he finished the swap.

I have two C20GET's.... one from an 87 Sunbird GT and another I bought from a fellow in BC that performed a swap into a 1989 Passport Optima ( Pontiac Lemans )... which I still have.

You may have seen me around here and there... I use to hang out on J-Body and Darmuck's LT3 site.

Sound like your on your way to some fun, another option is the Cosworth head from a European 16V which can produce even better power than the Nubira Head.

It can be found fairly easy.... there are a couple of German sites selling versions good for 10,000RPM and 12,000 RPM with a whole pile of titanium parts.

When I first got into the C20GET's I had a new Daewoo Lanos and ended up meeting a guy who goes by GSiTurbo since we both live here in Edmonton.

We compared his Passport Optima with my Lanos and came to the conclusion that the Lanos really is just an Astra MK2 ( Opel Kadett E / Pontiac Lemans /Passport Optima/ Daewoo Nexia ) with a new upper body structure... the main chassis is identical.

So I was going to do a C20GET swap.... but then I started to get into the 16V engines and ended up picking up a Chev Optra5 when they first arrived ( probably got one of the first ones in Canada... we test drove one they day they showed up at the dealership and I had mine the next weekend afterwards )

Also, i want something more reliable, the 2.0 OHC GM engine in the birds arnt the best. weak point as you would know are the heads. the Daewoos are a pretty solid running car. I might drop a LN2 into it still if i cant get the hybrid swap done in time.

Well.... any way you cut it a Daewoo is a korean Opel.... most of the drivetrain came from Opel/Holden directly.

The 1.6L was the only one made in Korea... the 2.0L engines came out of Australia's Holden engine plant.

I'm one of the admin for this site.... I use to go by the name of Erfinder on the other sites

I really didn't do too much posting.... mostly reading posts for research.... talked with Ned Southwick a few times as well as some of the regulars who were into the C20GET.

I'm on my Mac upstairs posting on my widescreen LCD so I have practically zero info on the german head guys right now.... all that info is either on my downstairs PC or my work computer.

Slowj doesn't come on much either..... other sites you might like are www.migweb.co.uk and www.astramk2.com

Both have tons of info on the 2.0L engines ( both 8V and 16V )
