Oil separator / catch can

Post by exist3nce »

For a long while now I've had more oil coming out from the valvecover PCV than I would like. It makes a mess around the turbo inlet, in the chargepipes, intercooler, and where the BOV vents. So to help this problem we made a custom oil separator also known as a catch can.

AVCR

Post by exist3nce »

Got myself a new toy! I found a good deal on this unit and couldn't pass it up.

Took about 3 hrs to install, as it requires that you tap TPS, RPM (I used coil negative), vehicle speed, 2 grounds and ofcourse switched 12v power.

Heres a generic description of what it does from the web:

The AVC-R is the premium closed-loop electronic boost controller on the market. The AVC-R allows flexible control over virtually every aspect of boost control and adds new innovative functions such as injector pulse monitoring and gear specific boost control. Some key functions include: RPM-based boost and solenoid duty cycle control, scramble boost, self learning mode2D ghost map trace mode, analog display mode, real time replay and peak hold data modes. The AVC-R utilizes an ultra-fast microprocessor and a high quality solenoid valve to control boost. The result is ultra-fast response and accurate, stable boost control. Due to the complexity of this product, A'PEX recommends having the AVC-R installed and tuned by a professional.

Interesting dyno results

Post by exist3nce »

So I bought some time on the dyno to play around with my AVCR, specifically the boost by rpm function. My goal was to see if I could shift my powerband higher in the RPMs and reduce torque while increasing horsepower. I am pleased to say it does work quite nicely and you can really do some interesting things with the powerband.

The day I was actually on the dyno was probably not ideal for peak power numbers because it was very humid out (humidity always seems to noticeably degrade my power), but I was more interested in playing with the torque curve anyways.

In this first image it shows how I tailored the boost curve to try to compensate for dropping torque, compared with my flat boost curve when I first got tuned with the new turbo. After quite a few test runs I eventually got it to stabilize at 7.5 psi until about 5100rpm and then ramp up to 10psi by redline

The second image shows the difference in power and torque from changing the boost curve. I wanted to raise the boost even higher in the top end, but I ended up blowing off a charge pipe and my time was up LOL.

Beyond 6000rpm the torque seems to drop like a rock no matter what, but I guess this is due to the cams, intake manifold and head design as has been discussed before.

Image Image

End result....... I was able to make 202whp with only 190 ft lbs of torque!
Also shifted my peak power point 600rpm higher from 5200 to 5800 :D

I believe if I was to go back on a normal day (cool and dry) I would probably make another 10whp with the exact same boost curve.

Ohhh nice! I've been thinking about getting this for awhile now. That doesn't happen to have a turbo timer built in does it?

I can't wait to see what it'll do with even more boost.

Very nice. Thats definitely going to make your gearbox that much happier with less torque. Unfortunetly the AVCR does not have a turbo timer built in. But there are a lot of companies that make decent ones for cheap. Hey existence, have you done anything to the cooling system of the car?

Nope the rad is stock....... and actually when the kit the first shop took out the larger cooling fan of the two. During the summer it would be on the edge of overheating, so I got a small Flexalite 8" fan to help out. It doesn't overheat, but you can't use the AC in a traffic jam on a hot day lol.

Nah no turbo timer, it only does boost control and logging.

Man, your work looks so clean but what's up with that boost tube going to the TB?

ahh I'm just giving you a hard time about this tune to the throttle body. the sections comming off the turbo look like nice tig welded stainless and the section to the throttle body reminds me of a vacuum hose.

:) no hard feelings like I said I'm just teasing ya. It kinda looks like it might just be a metal tube with a wrap on it.

either way everything looks really good ;)

ohhhhh lol I see what you mean now. Yah my stainless tig welded pipes continue into the engine bay and up to the TB, but its just covered for now so it doesn't draw so much attention if a cop pulls me over and wants to look under the hood. They are often very clueless around here and will just give out BS tickets like halloween candy.

this is how it looks under the black tube ahah:

Your turbo looks awesome - very nice installation. I am running a T3/T4 turbo as you were, but the exhaust housing is a 0.63 - from what you say about the spool up and boost it sound very much the same as what I am getting on mine.
Nothing is impossible....it just costs more!!!!\

Hi there.

can you post the graph from the dyno run - I would like to compare it to mine. Also you said your tranny died due to the low torque - I suppose you will lose some torque low down due to the delayed spool up time - maybe your tranny will survive better now??
