Need details on crank angle sensor & toothed wheel

Post by kinkyllama »

Can someone give me info on this stuff? I'm talking with perfect power about wiring and compatability and they asked for this info.

Thanks,
Danny

That's all they really said..and it takes 12hrs for them to reply min. cause of time zones.

Use an SMT-7, and possibly just mod the SMT6 harness to work

:? hhhmmmm, I'm away from the shop right now but when I get back I can take a look at the reluctor ring. off the top of my head there is only one flat spot that the sensor reacts to but I not really sure about the sensor. I don't know if it will help but I have an extra if they want to play with it. its from an early motor so the plug in is likely different but the function is the same. you could also ask them how they want it tested and I could do the test for you.

by the way I wrote you a long response to your last email and my computer crashed before it sent so when I regain my patience I'll give it another try.

Anything will help. I'll email them to see what exactly they're looking for.

Damn I HATE when that happens...if you need any support I'm here.

...I know there a couple people on these forums that have SMT7s. Anyone wanna speak up?
I don't having to buy a harness as well, since I have an account with them now it's very cheap.

Here's what they said:

"We need more details on the crank angle sensor, e.g. magnetic or hall
effect, if it is magnetic how wires have a signal? As well as what kind
of toothed trigger wheel does the vehicle have?"

k, here's what I have at the moment...

• the reluctor ring has 58 teeth
• the teeth are 4mm
• the space between teeth is 5mm
• the ring has one flat spot with no teeth that the sensor responds to
• the flat spot or gap measures 22mm
• the sensor is magnetic
• the sensor uses a three wire system

I did have a chance to do any tests to the sensor to see how it works but hopefully there is only one way for a magnetic sensor to work and they can use the info thus far. if I get a chance I'll try and run some tests to see how the circuit works.

Thank you! I sent off an email with the information. Is the aveo the same way by chance? One aveo member is wanting an SMT7 as well.

Does drive by wire make a difference on any of these things?

the Aveo is a bit different. the reluctor is on the crank pulley but I'm not sure what it looks like.

I think there would have to be provisions for the DBW but I really don't know anything about the SMT7 system so I can't say what that would entail.

I'm pretty sure all of them are using the standard cable driven throttle body as opposed to a Drive by wire system ( electronicly controlled throttle body )

I have an external crank wheel for an Aveo at my shop.... I will check it out for you... I don't think it's the same 60-2 ( 60 teeth with two missing ) as is found on the 2.0L engines.

Chris...the one at the shop is for Lanos 16v. Aveo uses internal reluctor wheel attached to the crank, just as the T20/U20 motors.

The newer forenza/renos use DBW, I think 2006+, not sure about the optras/lacettis

Really??? Hmmm.... that is interesting..... I only have shop manuals and EPC info for 2005 and 2004 models.... I had no idea the new ones use a drive by wire setup.

That must really hurt the throttle response...... the GSi is pretty much instant up and down.
