You should do the compression test, and the leak-down test. This will tell you if its the rings, or the problem in the cylinder head. Sorry to hear that.
gseturbo: you mean the euro ecotec? not very common in the wreckers but TBH its been a while since i last looked for one. but we have the forenza/optra and other gmdat cars. so there may be some around the wreckers.

I'd trade you heads ( XE for Ecotec ) but I imagine that would make a pile of work since the intake and exhaust manifolds wouldn't fit and the ECOTEC uses a distributorless ignition system.
I have couple spare intakes and exhaust manifolds..... it would probably be fairly easy to cut them so that it's just the flange and an inch or two of tubing.... then you could have your current stuff welded onto it.
Hmmm.... I guess there are also other differences such as the cam shaft pullys... the more I think of it the more of a pain it would be for you to make the ECOTEC work.
Are there any other XE's kicking around DR??

fortunally thanks to a friend in the UK (Steve Heley from astramk2.com) i sourced a pretty cheap XE empty head (no cams, springs, valves), the shipping will kill me but i have to do it in order to have a running car.
as XE/LET's around here... i have only seen mine.
Efrain.
