1.6L Cams

Post by Audacity Racing »

I've been talking back and forth with the guys at Kent cams for some Aveo/Lanos cams that are streetable (no tappet change, not lumpy).

They have been slow to respond, but this is prime season for race build-up so I'd imagine they are quite busy.

Anyway, the general idea is that a custom grind for the Woo would be too expensive, but they don't know if the X16XE cams will be too aggressive for the valvetrain. There is some fear that the Daewoo tappets might not take the concussion from the cam and we might get some nasty float.

Sooooo... They are sending me an X16XE cam to try in my Lanos to see the effects. I have an engine that I'm not using and the research will benefit everyone. I actually have three different cam profiles coming from the mild to pretty gnarly staying on the stock tappets. We'll see what comes of it.

Cams should be here somtime towards the end of February...

Shipping and core return sucked on this, so I hope we get good results. In my previous endeavor I used solid tappets with reinforced springs and had no trouble... we'll see what I get from this..

wow thats cool, even though I don't have a 1.6 I'm still interested to see what happens. Any chance for some 2.0 16v cams?

There are about a dozen companies making 2.0L cams.... I gave a link to Kinkyllama for a USA based company that makes some agressive 2.0L cams for the X20XEV (which fit the U20SED and T20SED).... not sure how he made out with them.

Just keep in mind that this is for a naturally aspirated vehicle..... for a turbo engine the stock "econonmy" cams are best with very little overlap.

Yes I know you don't want overlap with turbo or else you will loose boost, but what about more lift?? I would think that should help...

You actually have to be carefull with more lift on a boosted application. The boost is already effecting the spring return speed on the intake valves, if you push them further you make the problem worse. I'm not sure if it would be worth the effort to have the power gained be lost by the valvetrain losses of bigger springs (takes more effort to push the heavy spring down). Furthermore, the farther you push a spring, ther more force you need... so bigger lift on bigger springs makes for much bigger forces...

Honestly... not worth it unless you're boosting way high
