Re: Corner Weighting & Future plans (Turbo Optra)

I am leaning right now towards the AEM EMS because it is a very well known system and my tuner has many years of experience with it across different platforms. It may be able to use factory sensors as well.

I know several guys that are running megasquirt and have heard mixed results. I hear quite a few problems with the boxes themselves and buggy software that is always being updated. Also I've heard issues with the accuracy of the timing (it drifts around).

Haltech I haven't ruled out as I've been hearing good things about it as well, but you have to use their sensors which is has both good and bad aspects.

I could think of better ways to blow $1500 USD, but that's your choice with respect to management.... I just thought I'd let you know about the MS2 and the fact that I've purchased one ( set up with a 4 Bar sensor ) and that I will be building tuning maps specific to our 2.0L engine.

I am curious as to where you heard of issues wrt timing and the software as this is the first time I've heard anyone say anything about those two issues.

As far as the "BOX" that is dependant upon who assembles the EMS, if you buy it from some dude who made it in his garage.... well ya... your probably going to run into some issues.

Thats awesome news because theres a good chance i might put a basic turbo kit on my 2.0 aveo next summer, and i was thinking about using MS2 since my friend uses it in his car and he seems to really like it and it performs very nicely too.

If your building maps for the 2.0 engine that would be a huge help to me. I would at least have a base to start with.

I believe I paid around $2000 CAD at the time.

Head P&P, ARP studs, Cometic MLS

Post by exist3nce »

Of my future plans it looks like the head port and polish will be coming first.

I've already taken my spare head to my machinist and he should be starting on it this week. Along with that I've ordered ARP headstuds and a cometic MLS 0.074" gasket. Ofcourse during this time I will also replace the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, etc.

My machinist will also be using a flow bench to test the head before and after the porting to see what the gains are on paper. When all is done, I will be throwing it back on the dyno to retune and observe the power changes with varying amounts of boost.

Will running that head gasket affect your compression ratio? How mild or wild of a port and polish are you getting?

Stock thickness is 0.051" so yes, running the 0.074" will lower the compression a little bit. I'm not exactly sure by how much..... maybe 0.2 - 0.4 of one compression point. So if stock is 9.5, I will have 9.1 - 9.3. Anyone else know more about this?

The P and P will be moderate I would say. He will be taking into account my valve sizing and lift, port sizing and shape as well as previous experience with similar heads.

thanks! It only makes logical sense to put them in while the head is off :)

Porting numbers!

Post by exist3nce »

Over the past week my machinist has been working on my head, and tonight he finished it up and put it back on the flow bench to see the comparison with stock. The ports look fantastic and are much smoother than before. I have the flowbench results for now, but I will have some pictures of the ports soon. Overall I'm happy with the results this far :)

**All values are in CFM

Intake

Lift------ Before---After
0.100"------88------100
0.200"-----156-----172
0.300"-----189-----197
0.400"-----193-----212
0.450"-----197-----216

Exhaust

Lift------ Before---After

0.300"-----170-----184
0.400"-----174-----190
0.450"-----176-----193

Here I decided to graph the gains for both intake and exhaust to see a more visual representation.

I guess that's the thrill. After working in many hours, messing around, spend bucks of money,at the end it's all worth it.

congrats on getting the head all done! any pics on the exhaust ports? I'm interested in seeing if your machinest was able to understand what I was saying about how the port shape needs to be

Thanks. I will have nice port pictures of before and after when I get the head back into my possession (he wasn't quite done with it).

He also discovered today that 4 of my valves were slightly bent!!! I'm not sure how this happened since the timing belt never broke. We're just going to take 4 of the valves out of my current head and swap them over.

Does he have any opinions on how it happened? Didn't you cook a valve not too long ago?

I never cooked a valve..... I blew the headgasket back in April 2008. At that time I simply swapped in my spare motor. The head that is being ported now is from that spare motor that has sat around since then. Our only guess is that during the time when I kept driving the old motor with blown headgasket, it was eating so much coolant (1.5L+ per day) that I may have slightly hydrolocked the motor :?
