It maybe just easyier and cheaper to replace it. I've been looking into replacements for my car and have found used one with low miles for $60 shipped.

I am fairly sure the alternator from 88-93 Pontiac Lemans 1.6 SOHC should fit. Short of that, try www.car-parts.com and look for Lanos or Aveo alternator

2002 Lanos 1.5 SOHC... stock!!!
A rebuilt for a 1.6 lanos will run about $200.00 USD at AutoZone ( In Canada? you can call autozone at (800) 288-6966 for a quote.)
I personally think a rebuilt is a better way to go. Yes it is cheaper to replace bad bearings. But it's a bit of work and usually if the bearings are going out? the alternator will follow suite shortly. There is a company in the USA that rebuilds them completly for a reasonable price. I will see if I can find their link and add it to this post when I do.
EDIT:
This company has a great reputation.
(and no, I don't work for them)
