Hot smell on aveo LT

Post by duskglow »

I have an Aveo LT, about 7500 miles on it. Tonight I noticed a smell that smelled like hot oil or coolant coming out of the air vent. It does not smell like this outside the car, and only seems to do this on idle. Big deal or just something to keep an eye on?

It was not a strong smell but noticable.

if your heat is on, that is normal. the way to correct it is to get a oil catch can. you can get em cheap, like $35 shipped on ebay

It turns out that the engine was losing oil and it was burning off of the catalytic converter. I had to get a tow on Malibu Canyon today, the oil light came on.

Sad, car has 8,000 miles on it. I was hoping it'd be more reliable than this.

Dealer has it now, thankfully it's under warranty.

Just heard from the dealer, it was a failed oil pump gasket. Apparently they have a service bulletin out on that. Completely covered under warranty.

Apparently they have to replace it with a metal-reinforced version that doesn't fail.

Well, at least I don't have to pay for another oil change for another 3,000 miles.
