Timing belt... How many kms???

Post by mr_sikma »

Hey,

Nearing to 90,000kms and was wondering if they timing belt 'had' to be done then or not?

How long do they last? Mechanic reckons its common to change them closer to 100k rather than 90k as they hardly ever go?

Cheers

Jase

Hi,

You didn't stated for which engine/car. I change the kit at 60,000km plus water pump at 120,000km. Daewoo Nubira 2000 1.6 DOHC.
Anyway refer at least to the user manual for intervals.

On the contrary, they ALWAYS go. Change them at 60,000 miles or about 96,000 Kms. The sooner the better. Its a catastrophic failure if they break. And they do break.

I've seen timing belts go right upto 130-140,000kms... It just depends on how the car was treated and also abit of luck.
You're best bet is too change it a.s.a.p - Prefererbly before 100,000kms mark... Usually workshops schedule service change it at 90,000kms mark.

And please do me a favour... MAKE SURE THEY CHANGE THE IDLE & TENSIONER BEARINGS AT THE SAME TIME !!! AND ALSO WATER PUMP WHILE EVERYTHING IS OFF... It will save you money in the future and you wont have to worry about it !!
