exhaust heat wrap

exhaust heat wrap
is it save to use heat wrap on a stock exhaust manifold? any help is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

i'm all for heat wrap on exhaust, stock or not. if i were you, i'd wrap the down pipe if you get one and the rest of the exhaust that's in the engine compartment.
if you pull your first cat, using heat wrap will make your second cat work better.
you should port the inlet and outlet of the manifold also since you'll have it out.
if you can go without your car for a day, you should have a media-blasting shop shot-peen the rest and carbon build up. then either have it ceramic coated or get some 'POR 15 manifold paint' ($30/pint) it's a brush on application.
you'll have to wrap the manifold with the wrap wet and if you don't treat the manifold then it will rust and shorten the lift of the wrap.
it's also a good idea to paint the wrap once it's on the manifold and the POR 15 is rated at 1400 degrees.

well see the reason i want to do it is that i already have to take the mani off to get a crack brazed up (i cant afford a header to replace it). im not really going for performance. i just thought since it was off, id work on getting it so there was less heat in the engine bay. if i can do it ill take it to work and sand blast it. we dont have shotpeen (yet) but it never hurts to get rid of the rust thats already there. thank you for the advice. if any one else has any thing to say im all open to listen.

I just wrapped my intake and OEM manifold with the wrap, I also glued a layer of exhaust wrap on the underside of the heatshield and painted it with ceramic high-temp paint.
Engine temperatures are down DRAMATICALLY.
But be really careful using the stuff. If you overlap it too much, it won't let any heat escape and it will lead to warping/cracking of the manifold.

yes and no. you should use POR 15 before heat wrap but you can't reuse heat wrap cause to get the best results the manufacturers of heat wrap recommend using a high temp paint over the wrap after it's dried (from the water used while wrapping).kinkyllama wrote: So POR 15 then heat wrap?

Is POR 15 recommended to use over the heat wrap as well then? Or should something else be used? i have a polished stainless header that i media blasted along with all the turbo housings. i'll paint the header, turbine housing, down pipe and probly just past the fuel cell and i'll be wrapping it also. i'll also be using a turbine heat wrap.
the POR 15 manifold paint is good stuff but if you want a paint application only then ceramic coating is the best way, it will keep the heat in.
