Slow starting when engine warm?

Post by Turtle_Wax »

When I start my Lanos sohc from cold it always starts instantly on the first turn of the key. But when I start it when the engine is warm, or if the outside temp is very hot, it spins a few times before starting and sometimes I have to use a touch of throttle. Now I thought this was normal but when I drive my friends Lanos it always starts first turn of the key regardless if the engine is cold or hot so I'm wondering why my Lanny doesn't start as good when the engine is warm. Any ideas?

give her a tune up (plugs wires, filters, fluids, etc.) that should at very least help it.

i dunno how slow u mean, if u mean the starter it self is rev slower when its warm, then u may need to fis the bearings and connections inside the starter...but if u mean that u need to crank alot longer time when its warm more than cold, then i think u need to replace filters first and see if there is any progress, if not, then i think ur injectors are starting to go bad.

Yeah it takes longer cranking to start when warm. I've ordered a service kit which includes plugs, air, fuel & oil filters and also a fuel pressure regulator. It's done over 115k miles on the original injectors so I think they may also be in need of a service.

if the engine is warm and you turn off the engine for just 30 seconds... does it start right away?

are the slow starts is associated with black smoak from the exhaust?

were your old spark plugs covered with black deposits?

if the answer is yes on all 3 questions then you got leaky injectors

Thanks guys.
It doesn't start as good when restarted from hot but there is no smoke and the car drives very well once started. Cranking when hot does feel like fuel starvation and needs a few more turns and sometimes a dab of throttle to get the fuel ignited. So may well be injector probs?

I found a local garage who does injector service using a ASNU machine to check & clean injectors ultrasonically. When I do the engine service I will pop them off for the garage to check.
Will let you know if there's any change.

when it needs a bit of opened throttle to start, it doesnt mean that its igniting, but the injectors leaks when u stop the car, and the fuel still inside while its supposed not to keep any fuel inside after turning the engine off, so when u open the throttle while cranking to start the engine, actually u let more air goes inside to have enough amount to match the extra amount of fuel inside from leaking, so they can fire up and start the engine...
I am pretty sure that it gives out a lil dark smoke once it starts for a second or two but u cant notice it when u r inside the car, try to let someone start the engine and stand behind the car to watch the muffler and see if it smokes or not.

Thanks for the info, I took the injectors to be checked today. He has not had chance to do a full service yet but did say 2 injectors are down on performance and reduced spray pattern. I told him to do whatever needs doing and I pick them up tomorrow. In the meantime I today replaced the plugs, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, K&N high flow air filter and cleaned the fuel rail so it's nice & shiny. And with the serviced injectors fitted it should make a big improvement.

Just to confirm, When fitting the injectors do you first attach them to the fuel rail and then push them into the inlet?

ya, fit them in the fuel rail first then fit the fuel rail with the injectors fitted in it to the inlet

Injectors are now fitted and everything is ok. He did a leak test and various other injector tests and they were all fine but 2 injectors were not performing as good. He cleaned them in the ultrasonic machine until they were all squirting properly and evenly. To be honest I've not noticed any big improvement in performance but it does seem to be smoother and a bit more responsive. He also said I will notice better fuel mileage as the injectors are now spraying better whereas previously the O2 sensor would have been compensating for the poor spray pattern by increasing the fuel. I will see how it performs over the next few weeks.

ya. u will notice increacing in milage i hope. and at least a better engine start when its warm, but make sure to use the octane booster or the injector cleaner from time to time, at least every month, cuz the cleaned injectors are easially going bad again if u didnt take care of them

+1 That's what the mechanic advised and also said it helps to remove the water in the fuel from condensation which forms in the fuel return pipe.
