C20GET Valve Springs

Post by GsiTurbo »

Hi Guys,

So I pulled out some 'spare' springs I had lying around to get their measurements. Here are some pictures (sorry for the poor quality), and dimensions:

Image Image
Image

Height: 1.18145 inch = 46.05mm
Inside diameter: 0.832 inch = 21.09mm
Outside diameter: 1.1565 inch = 29.38mm
Coil thickness: 0.1585 inch = 3.96mm

Step 2 would be to try to mix and match something...in terms of a stronger spring.

To anyone unfamiliar with those springs your eyes aren't deceiving you, they are larger at one end than the other! Goofy huh? Kinda like the Chevy LS1 spring I believe.

Hmm...gues what? 2 liter turbo is right!

One end of the spring is marked with a paint of some sort...upon rechecking the diameter, these are the findings:

Painted end: 1.1335 inch = 29.01 mm
Unpainted end: 1.148 inch = 29.27mm

Very strange

Here's something else you might find interesting. I'm rebuilding a new engine and when my machinist was reassembling the head he had trouble finding new springs. For the heck of it he checked the old springs to see how bad they were and they had higher tension at the recommended installed height then what the book called for. I asked him if his scale might be off and he assured me it wasn't. So I reused them and we'll see what happens.

Hmmm....dunno about the springs. I had a little floating valve accident a while ago, and with the new had I am playing with right now I want no mistakes.

I'll let everyone know if I find anything in regards to the springs.

Is there any reason why we couldn't go with regular straight springs?

My only thinking about the spring diameter changing is that it might make it a non-linear spring rate... I manufacture springs at my shop but I've allways made simple linear or progressive springs with the same diameter throughout.

I wonder if the Daewoo springs are tapered like the C20GET.
