What is this tube and what does it do?

Could someone tell me what the tube in red is and what exactly it does?

crank case breather, it lets the engine ventlate the gases that did escape through the cylinder walls and accumilated in the inside of the engie... if this line is blocked the pressure will continue to build up and damage your crank seals.

what if it wasn't hooked up but not blocked?

And is it possible that if this was disconnected it might cause a misfire?

it will just throw the gases and oil vapor into your engine bay... the car won't smell that great and the oil vapor will condense on the engine and make it look bad a well. you can just add a little breather to reduce those effects or get an oil catch can to stop the oil from condensing in your intake.

if it was unplugged it won't cause a misfire... actually this will make the intake air more fresh and give better combustion but the improvment will be very little to notice on the short run.

the only reason it is hooked up is so that the fumes are run through the intake and burnt. Its an emmissions thing
