Post by milan »

according 2 wikipedia.com the ecotec engine is an updated d-tec/e-tec (d-tec is familyI(smaller version of familyII) and then the e-tec & current ecotec are all familyII)....so can't i drop in the ion redline or cobalt ss engine into the cars in the heading?

There is the European Ecotec (Opel/Vauxhall), and the North American Ecotec. The two engines have nothing in commong. Interestingly, as a contradiction to the rule, the Opel Speedster 2.2 uses....varian of North America Ecotec.

the site says that this cx20 engine is a familyII ecotec engine from gm

anyway, what engines in the US can i put in those cars i listed besides the sunbird cx20

also, can't i put the suzuki reno/forenza engine in those cars? basically the same engine?

why the hell would gm develop 2different engines with same name?

from wikipedia - The 2.2 L Ecotec is used in the following cars:

2000-2002 Saturn L-Series
2002-2004 Chevrolet Cavalier
2002-2005 Pontiac Sunfire
2003-2005 Saturn L-Series (high output)
2003 Vauxhall VX220/Opel Speedster<< - as 360 mentioned
2004 Chevrolet Classic
2004 Chevrolet Malibu
2005 Chevrolet Cobalt (140 hp/150 ft.lbf)
Oldsmobile Alero
Pontiac Grand Am
Saturn ION
Saturn VUE
Opel Astra<<
Opel Vectra<<
Opel Zafira<<

so it was used on american and european cars!

from wikipedia - Ecotec name was adopted in 2000 for the new generation of Family II engines. The name was already used for Opel Family 1 and Family 0 range. GM intends for this new Ecotec to become its global 4-cylinder.

Ecotec Family II is a modern chain-driven DOHC 4-valve design with an aluminum block and head (L850), designed for displacements from 1.8 to 2.4 L. It was developed by an international team of engineers and technicians from Opel's International Technical Development Center in R?sselsheim, Germany, GM Powertrain in Pontiac, Michigan, and Saab in Trollh?ttan, Sweden. The engine uses aluminum pistons and cast iron cylinder liners and vibration is reduced with twin balance shafts.

>>it says the engine is a (global) design that was co-developed in US and Europe

i'm totally confused now..so the cavalier, cobalt, lanos and astra all have different engines or what..just tell me what is swappable into the cars i listed in the heading
