Out put power question

Post by nefary »

I need to know how can I compare between engines?. I know that cars' engines have many no.like power (in HP or Kw) , torque (in kg-m or Nm) and so on.
I want to know what is the main number from that is the right one to judge on that engine?
for an example I have two engines
1- 1.8L with max power 130 HP@6000 rpm- max torque 18.2 kg-m @ 4400 rpm
2- 1.8L with max power 140 HP@ 6000 rpm -max torque 16.7 kg-m @3800rpm

what is the better from the previous?

If there are diffrent methods to judge the comparison please tell me

it depends on what you prefer your car to feel.

taking into assumption that you will put both engines in the very same car we will get the follwing:

1- the car with the 140 HP engine will have higher top spee than the one with the 130 HP.

2- the car with the 18.2 torque will have better pull than the one with the 16.7 and better 0-100Kms time.

3- the car with the 16.7 torque will feel much smoother during driving in traffic as you get the max torque at lower RPM than the 18.2 engine.

as you see it depends on what yuo want the car to feel... for me i won't give a damn about the HP and torque numbers... i will just go with the car that got the best 0-100Kms time.

Yes sure. you wont need top speed all the time.but you will need to accelrate in many situations. so I think my next car will be the highest torque . I will dont care about HP much . I can increase all these nombers in the future by means of engine's modifications

also remeber that with all things beeing even a lighter weight car will accelerate faster than a heavier one so you better stick with actual performance times (like 0-100Kms time and top speed) rather than engine output numbers as HP and torque.

Less weight has more advantages than anything... better breaking, accel, cornering, less brake/tire wear.
