HELP..Engine idles but stalls when acc pedal pushed

Post by eightball »

Can anybody help. My 1999 Lanos 1.6SX is dead.

While on the motorway the engine management light came on, so I stopped checked oil, water. Oil was just above min, so I topped it up and set off. No light on now so thought prob solved. About 80miles on I stopped for a coffee for 20mins and set off again, just as I got off the sliproad onto m/way lost all power and car cut out, and wouldn't restart.

I've had a mechanic look at it and he checked everything over. He said that there was good spark, petrol supply ok and good compression in all cylinders. Injectors working ok.

He did say that even though fuel pump ok not enough fuel being injected. [/b]

That sounds like you need to replace the fuel filter.

tb = throttle body

greenbluewoo: Yes ... where is it located? I have not had problems with mine, so I have never made it a point to look for it.
Can you take and post a picture? It would be helpful to us all. Thanks!

eightball : I really do recomend changing the fuel filter. That very closely describes what was happening to my old Hyundai and found it was the fuel filter.
The throttle body sensor makes sence as to it doing that, too. Check both and we'll keep helping as we are able to do so.

a faulty TPS (Throttle position sensor) will cause the engine to idle at some 3000 RPM... that's a personal experiance.

the TPS is located on the other side of the big plastic pulley where the throttle cable is mounted...just under the idling speed sensor on the TB.

this could be a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) problem... when the vacuum line connecting that sensor to the intale fell off, the CEL came on and the car sputtered as hell.

the MAP sensor is mounted rigt in the middle of the fire wall and got a vaccum tube connecting it to the intake... check it and make sure it is OK.

Thanks guys help is much appreciated.

Right just changed fuel filter and no difference.

I have checked all the connections. MAP sensor makes a bit of difference when disconnected idles faster for bout 10secs then cuts out.

Car not idleing any more. When I start it rthe evs go to about 1200rpm, then within a few secs drop right down & stalls.

Coming to conclusion will have to call out auto-electrician with diagnostic tool. Will find that hard to swallow though, I hate the fact that those guys know they have you by the balls & can charge what they want just to tell you what the comp says.

Known people shell out over ?100 to be told the fault is a loose wire.

One last attempt before ringing for the cavalry (mobile mechanic).

Done self diagnostic and ECU gave me code 53. Looked up codes and it seems 53 is fuel pump relay low voltage.

Now does that mean fuel pump is dead or what. Could it be just the relay gone.

If anyone could help me sort this it would be much appreciated.

The guys on here have been superb, I can't thank everybody enough.

Cheers

if that is the case try replacing the relay and test the car before doing anything else.
