ok, I've had my '99 Lanos for just about a year now...this year I'm going to do exterior mods, to get a little more out of the stock engine I have in it now, which only has about 83,000kms on it...however, next year I would like to change it, to something with a little more juice..has anyone done this or know which engines are most compatible(for lack of a better word)?
assuming you got the 1.6 16 valve on your Lanos you can put a 2.0 16 valve in your car, the swap is doable as Jason (AKA GOD) from the daewootech yahoo group managed to do it.
i don't know how hard is it going to be for getting a 2.2 engine in your engine bay but if it can fit it will be one hell of a mod.
I noticed you have a Canadian flag.... where are you from??
The 2.2L will fit equally as well as the 2.0L
Basicly the lanos shares the same chassis as a 90 Pontiac LeMans/Optima which was better know as an Opel Astra / Kadette
The easiest way to do it is to get rid of the stock central 2.0L/2.2L engine mount and use a mount from a 91 Lemans/Optra 2.0L
This 2.0L is an 8V TBI version of the current 2.0L 16V engine found in the Daewoo vehicles.
The 2.0L Lemans/Optima and the Lanos share the same engine bay dimensions, engine and transmission mounts and suspension.
The main problem in using this Lemans engine mount is the fact that the 16V uses those same holes to mount the power steering and A/C
So if you wanted to drop in a 2.0L/2.2L 16V you would have to make up a bracket to support the Power steering and A/C in a slightly different configuration.
I was wondering if you could attach the engine mount to the block with double sided threaded studs.... this way the mount goes in the correct position and the power steering stuff gets moved out two or three inches.
I don't know if this is possible..... I will have to look and see if there is enough room and a clear path for a longer accessory belt to be run.
The easiest swap is still the C20GET from an 87 to 91 Sunbird GT Turbo.
This non-intercooled turbo 2.0L 8V has Multiport fuel injection and runs 7psi off a Garrett T25
These engines are a dime a dozen.... you could probably pick one up for less than $400 at the local scrap yard.
With this engine it allready has that front engine mount like the Lanos so everything is allready positioned and nothing needs to be adjusted.
The turbo might interfere with the plastic radiator fan.... so you might have to reposition things or do what Opel did..... replace it with a low profile metal fan. (very nice)
With the 2.0L 8V turbo you would still need to get the LeMans/Optra engine mount..... they are nearly identical but one is just slightly longer than the other.....so it's easier to pay $10 and get the correct mount.
I will post some pictures...... I've done this post a couple times before but now I have all the different engines required to take good pictures.
If you don't mind traveling you should come see me and Tom (360 Dynamics) out here in Edmonton this summer.... we can show you what needs to be done to make the swap happen.
Tom could give you a ride in his 91 LeMans with the C20GET conversion ( fast car ) to show you what your Lanos would be like.
I should mention that allthough the 2.0L 8V Turbo fits just great the wiring would take some time to figure out.
Eventually I want to make a standard "swap" harness so that people can simply purchase the wiring required to do a "plug and play" install of a 2.0L into a Lanos.
This harness would allready be available if I had kept my Lanos.... as I have a C20GET that was going to go into it...... but then I sold the car to a friend and purchased a new Optra 5 ( Daewoo Lacetti ) which allready has the 2.0L 16V.
I live in the greater toronto area, my woo has got a 1.5L DOHC engine...I know some woo enthusiasts will be terribly insulted by this, but what about a honda/acura engine, like a b series engine, or a GSR motor, I've heard good things about them, and I want to make my car able to compete with other imports on the road
I think someone else did a swap with a Integra GSR motor..... but it was something like $10,000 to $15,000
Honestly..... for that amount of money it's really not worth it.
A European C20LET ( 2.0L factory turbocharged 16V ) can be pushed to 325hp with some standard modifications.
A C20LET would probably cost you somewhere in the range of $2500 with shipping ( Just a Guess )
If your going to do this you'd need a better transmission..... the C20LET was often paired up with a 4WD 6spd which can easily be converted to a 2wd setup.
I really nicely rebuilt Getrag F28 6spd will run about $2500
So after shipping everything here and rebuilding the C20LET with some performance parts you would be looking at about $8000 (just an estimate)
This engine/tranny combination would absolutely destroy a typical honda civic engine..... you would have to swap and H22, H23 or K20 series engine to make similar power and torque.
Then there is the install.... if you can do it yourself then it won't cost you anything..... if you have a shop do it you can expect to pay several thousand dollars.
There are lots of posts about the 2.0L swap..... use the search engine and I'm sure you will see this topic has come up a dozen or more times.
