timing belt snapped, advice sought

Post by daewoolanos 2000 sport »

ok, so my belt snapped due to my pos stepdad 'beating it with a hammer', according to my trustworthy mechanic. theyve never ripped me off, and offer a 2 year warranty on all parts and labor. the thing is, since the belt snapped, they told me the camshaft housing was shattered, the head needs light to moderate work, and the drive belts and timing belt need to be changed. theyre currently quoting me 1200 for parts and labor, but they said itll probably drop when they get definitive totals on all parts needed. is this too high?

you probably also have bent valves since the lanos has an interference engine. i'm not sure about what the cost should be but you should look on ebay b/c they will have some of those parts brand new for real cheap.

oddly, no bent valves. thats the first thing they checked :D thats one of the big things they kept repeating why the engine is still usable.

you know what i wasn't really paying attention the reason why you don't have bent valves is b/c the motor wasn't running was it when your stepdad broke it? well you got lucky then.

You could get a whole new engine for less than $1200

Hell.... you could get a 2.0L for less than that (although the install would be expensive if done by a mechanic who knows nothing about Daewoo engines )

My opinion is that this is less than a days work.

I'd be curious what "the head needs light to moderate work" means.

Where do you live??

What is SATX?
