shutdown

Post by GutlessSupreme »

My girlfriend was driving her '99 Nubira last week while it just shut down as she was moving. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but from what I've been reading, these syptoms either describe..

fuel pump - my first guess... but like I said I haven't really looked at it yet

timing belt - suggestion someone made, and it might be the case.. mileage is about right, ~60k miles, and she said it sounded like a belt or something up there was making some kind of noise for 3 weeks or so.. I could never pick it out though. Really hoping it wasn't the belt.. if it was, bye bye woo.

ECM - First thing I'm going to try is resetting it as has been suggested here.. if resetting gets me nothing I'll check for fuel spark, and if they're both good.. guess that leave's the belt :-?

After it shut down, it would crank as long as I held it, definetly wasn't a battery issue, would never catch though

Anything else it could be? And how can I check the timing belt? Only t-belt I've ever dealt with was on my friend's 2.5 Caravan, I don't know how they differ (or don't) car to car.. just a cover to remove, and if the belt is no more, then :(?

Remove the cover, and if you do not see a belt, or see belt parts, then the belt broke and there is most likely engine damange.

The fist thing I would check is the timing belt.

Lets hope it isn't that and there is no engine damage.

It was the belt.. I didn't have practically any tools with me so I couldn't take much off, but I got the clips on the upper part of the cover off. Belt's wasted. If I ever have time again between school, work, upcoming college crap and my new project coming at the end of the week (turbo grand prix), I'll eventually tear it down to the block and see exactly how bad it is.

What else could have been damaged besides the valves? (assuming rods and pistons are fine.) guides? lifters? springs?

Thanks

well just pray that a piece of the valves didn't break off. It has happened before and pretty much turns the engine into scrap metal.
