Cam timing position sensor replaced, CEL on

This is an odd problem I can not seem to solve, so I am asking if anyone has any ideas.

2002 Lanos hatchback, 1.6L, automatic

Intermittently, the check engine light would come on, stay on from 10 minutes to a week or so, then turn back off.
The code said it was the cam sensor.

I did not find anything in particular that would cause it to turn on or go back off; it was totally random.
If it was on, I could clear the codes with my OBDII tool, and it would come right back on after I was finished.
What ever made it turn off, is still unknown to me.

I replaced the cam timing position sensor with a new one and now the CEL is always on and never goes off now.

Maybe a bad sensor, new out of the box?
Has anyone had this problems?
Anyone know what the next step should be?

I have the same issue with the same results in my 1.6 with a 5-speed.

are you using gm sensors or aftermarket?

I do not believe it is a genuine GM part.

The ebay listing says:
AUTO 7 INC 040-0011 Cam Position Sensor

This may be the problem.
I am going to search for the GM part number, but if anyone knows it, feel free to post it here.

it is almost always the problem in regards to GM sensors... it's genuine or nothing

if you're having trouble finding genuine sensors, they usually have corresponding european cousins and thus can be found on sites such as vauxhall world parts

Maybe I should just buy a sensor from the local Chevy dealer for a 2004 Aveo. I believe it's the same part number.

It's not genuine but I believe Delphi supply GM anyway, so it is genuine in a round-a-bout way

Very true. If it ever comes up, I don't mind consolidating orders to one shipment for international orders to those who need it.

If I remember correctly that camshaft position sensor code clears itself after 3 good ignitition cycles with no codes. if it doesn't get another code it goes out on its own. is there any way that the computer "stores" it until those 3 clean cycles happen, even if you reset it? I had a similar problem with my CPS that was intermittent, but after i replaced it i have not had a problem.

The sensor was replaced, but I am going to try a different one.
I can clear active and logged codes and the light will come back on.
Somewhere at my parent's house, I think I have a factory one from a 2001 Lanos, but the problem is actually finding what I did with it.
