1.6l e-tech engine ticking noise

Post by TylerLee »

I just purchased a 2004 Aveo. It has the 1.6 straight 4 motor. The motor makes a clicking (or ticking) noise. The noise kind of makes it sound like a deisel.
I would appreciate it if anyone would share their thoughts on what I should check.
I will be checking the timimg belt first. Checking that the timimg marks are lined up.
It does run + has adequate power. The noise seems to go away at the highest RPM just before you shift.

I have read that it it may be a loose valve. Are the valves adjustable on this motor ?

I have read that it may be a leak in the exhaust manifold.

thanks for any help.

It might be a loose valve, or it could just need fresh oil change. you can use a long flat screwdriver and touch the metal end to the valve cover and the handle to your ear over each cylinder and you can listen for any difference in valve sound.

best of luck.
