Cone filter

Post by TheGreatAndPowerfulOz »

Ok ... I spent $25 whole dollars on a new cone filter and replaced the stock air box.

I didn't even use any kind of pipe to extend it from the stock rubber intake.

What a differance! The car has a LOT more get-up-and-go. LOL

My dad (who is almost 70 yrs old) liked it so much, he made me buy a filter for his Lanos & do the same. :)

What about when it heats up, doesn't it run slower since it draws hot air from under the hood?

the heat is indeed a problem.. BUT i used this setup before compared to stock i do believe its better...

But Oz you should really try to get a smooth rubber hose and install the filter outside engine bay (where resonator is atm) then you will get even more power  and i think you will hear it less inside car also (considering its you oz i geus you will like that even more lol)

i used a intercooler hose from a mitsubishi pajero diesel (dno engine though) it bend and goes in hole pretty well and is very smooth inside

Ya see, I am thinking that the intake is hot anyway, and most cars nowadays are set to run pretty hot, so, the intake air is heated up pretty good anyway before it gets to the combustion chamber, and it's designed to run that way, so a true cold air intake wouldn't make much a difference, and that a less retrictive shorter intake would make more of a differnce. That's my theory.

I am awaiting to see what OZ thinks.

I learned alot about intakes lately and a cheap way to mke a less restictive pipe is using ABS piping from a hardware store. they sell all the bends you need to so you could run that filter as far from your engine as you want. I just did that with my air box which now takes in air from the fog lamp hole. I have pictures soon. By the way seal all the piping you make with a silacone substance. I use marine grade because it can tke heat, cold and water.

I know I need to extend the filter to a different location where it can draw cooler air.

I also know it will be louder where it is, but currently, with all the sound deadening I have installed, I can't really hear a difference. :)

The $40 intake pipe like Slammed has is one I was looking at, but decided to just use the filter like it is now until I get the bent pipe to go into the hold and down behind the fender where the stock resinator is.

Even with the hot air of the engine bay, there is a LOT more power than before when it was using the stock air box.
I have not noticed any power loss when the engine bay heats up, so as of yet, it is doing a lot better than it was before.

The only think I have noticed is my idle, at times, runs a lot higher for a while, but then goes back down.
Maybe I need to do that idle adjustment thing I read about on here by turning the ignition on & off and putting it in park and drive and turning on the A/C ... or something like that ... I don't remember the steps off hand.

Anyway ... this is just temporary and I wanted to post how much better it was, even just with the filter on the stock intake pipe.

resetting the ecu that way actaully makes a big difference, usually i will just drive the car for a while until it sets its self but when i did it the right way, the car hooked up right away, went out and left some black in second gear

i think you will have to kill it first so that it starts from fresh relearn

just unplug battery cable for a minute then plug it back in. if you have auto door looks they will unlock or try to unlock if the ecu reset and your ready to start
