serpentine belt tensioner ?

Post by johnoo »

hi,
have replaced the pulley on a nubira 1.6 serpentine belt tensioner, problem is i bought the correct belt before i purchased the pulley, and the aftermarket pulley is slightly larger.
so now my $50 belt is about 10-15mm too short and cannot be returned.
took the tensioner off to see if the tension could be adjusted as well as grinding the stop a little to give it more travel.
May be tricky to adjust the tension- but would just grinding the stop to allow the belt to fit cause the belt tension to be too tight and cause bearings on alternator e.t.c to wear quicker.
Is this possible, or should i just measure the new pulley and work out the correct new belt size and waste the $50.

nevermind, managed to pull it apart, ended up die grinding away about 5mm where the spring rests on the tensioner arm to reduce the tension, and cut some of the upper stop away so there is more travel, so i can put the belt on.
tricky to put back together.
Now i find out i could have bought the correct size pulley at a bearing shop. they have all different sized pulleys for the serpentine belts. cheaper than the car joints as well.
