Flashing Check Engine Light

Post by jccjr1982 »

Hello,

I have a weird issue here...

I was driving my 2001 Lanos on a 350 mile trip back from Vegas to San Diego, CA. About 100 miles into the trip my CEL started flashing. I got nervous because last time it did that my head gasket was blown. I pulled off on the nearest exit immediately.

I have a Scangauge II installed, but it didn't report any codes while the light was flashing.

Conveniently I had a my 3100a Innova scanner in my car. Hooked that up; "No codes detected". All readiness sensors online.

Baffled, I checked for the obvious (major leaks, coolant tank, etc.). Nothing out of the ordinary.

I cycled the engine, the light disappeared. Car ran perfectly and made the trip back no problem.

What happened? Should I be nervous?

History/Information:
2001 Daewoo Lanos
Blown head gasket repaired about 8 months ago.
P0440 Code pulled about a month ago. Firmly reapplied my gas cap; code never returned.

At the time of the flashing was there any hesitation or misfiring?

What octane fuel did you put in at the start of your trip?

When you did your headgasket did you replace your timing belt and tensioners?

I didn't feel any misfires/hesitation. Car was cruising normally around 70-75 mph, and I wasn't going uphill/downhill at that moment.

87 Octane.

The timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley, and water pump were all replaced during the headgasket repair, not to mention the OEM thermostat housing (which split in half and was bolted together by previous owner), was replaced with a brand new metal version too.

all i can say is that the code should be in the history, and the scanner should be able to read the history.

That's what I thought (along with the freeze frame information), but thats not the case in this case.

I know it sounds like I'm losing it or leaving something out, but I swear thats what happened.

Flashing can be showing knocking/misfire, but I would have expected to see a code.

I wouldn't worry about it too much at this point.... not much you can do without some information like scan codes.
