Other things to do while having the water pump changed?

Post by Carr »

I have my car booked in 2 days to have the water pump changed as well as a new timing belt kit including tensioner and idler pulley. Are there any other things that I should get done while the belt is off or while the cooling system is empty? I was thinking about a new thermostat and temp sensor but not sure as these are fairly easy to change myself. Thanks

I purchased the car about 8 months ago with about 125k km's on the clock and detailed service history. Labour here can be upto about $100 per hour so I thought I would check if there was anything else I should do to save me some $$ in the future.

basically you are doing a timing belt + water pump job... i'd throw in an alternator + A/C belt along with air and fuel filter + spark plugs... as long as you can't do it yourself

Thanks guys.

I will have them check the oil pump as well just to be safe as I have a very noisy top end and don't can't afford to fix it if it goes bang.

Noisy top end? As in lifter click? The only lifter click I know on these motors is after the car hasn't been started in a while. That's when there is a slow lifter that hasn't pumped up yet. It is loud, but temporary. Better find out what that is. Rod knock is quiet on these motors...

A weak Oil pump will set off the oil pressure light at idle before the lifters click.

If the are cracks in the serpentine belt, replace it. If it takes more than 1 mile for the car to reach operating temp, do the thermostat. Swap coolant if fluid is older than 2-3 years.
