1997 Daewoo Cielo - Wont start - Just replaced head gasket

Post by bsredman »

Hi I just replaced the head gasket on my 97 cielo. Replacement was easy, it started first go when back together (apart from a minor confusion with ignition leads) and drove for around 20 minutes before making an arcing sound under acceleration, then the engine trouble light came on and it hasn't started since.

I have replaced plugs, leads, checked and double checked timing (although this is difficult without obvious timing marks), have cleaned injectors, physically gone through and matched rotor button position with cam lobe position at strokes and have set distributor positing with a timing light and have everything perfect.

Can anyone suggest what I am missing.

- The battery is brand new and is fine
- The leads and plugs are new and fine
- The rotor button has been cleaned, the distributor cap is fine and has been cleaned
- There is fuel in the car
- When you remove spark plugs and test each of them there is spark and fuel mist spurting out of the cylinder when you crank

The engine trouble light is still on -- what am I missing??

Where is the cam position sensor and/or crankshaft position sensor and how do I test, more importantly could this be the issue? Also does anyone know how to check the electronic ignition module in the distributor? Could my problem just be a weak ignition coil - I have tested and am coming up with 0.01 ohm resistance on the terminal test, and 9,000 ohm on the terminal and high tension terminal test. Spark doesn't seem real bright, orange in colour, but would this cause the engine malfunction light to come on ~ I would think not??

Help please, very frustrated.

hi,
With sparks and fuel spraying your crankshaft sensor sould be OK.
I don't know if it is a camshaft sensor on this engine.
Since you have "engine trouble light" ON read the error code with the "paper clip" method by shorting A & B on ALDL connector.

Thanks Daniel.

Not to sound stupid at all, I kinda get what you mean by the paper clip method, and can see the aldl connector, but would be really appreciative for guidance or a diagram or some sort on exactly which pins to insert the paper clip into. I have no idea.

Here you can find the right shape and pin layout of your connector: http://www.techedge.com.au/vehicle/aldl8192/8192hw.htm .
And many informations on our forum by help of the "search" function, FAQ & HOW-TO ;) .

Providing your engine management is ALDL:
You short A & B or 5 & 6.
You switch ignition ON. Not strarting.
You watch the MIL (orange lamp on dashboard) and count the flashes.
Each code is repeated 3 times.
First code is 12, start of sequence: flash pause flash flash * **
Followed by error codes if any.
Last code is 12 again, end of sequence: * **

The sequence is repeated untill you switch OFF and remove the jumper.

Then give us the code(s).

Good luck,

Hey this is irelivant to the problem with your cielo...(ignition modules are a bit of problem with that engine...but if it is sparking im guessing your timing belt has slipped perhaps with thankgod for you its a sohc i take it) but back to my question for daniel on our 1.6 nubiras do we have a cam position sensor and where is it i bought a workshop manual off ebay cheap and some things seem different to me well the engine is catergorized as a 1.4 and 1.6 wich is fine the engines are probably identical besides all the specs.. but i dont remember seeing my cam possie sensor when i ripped the head off the person before i got the car pulled the cam covers off and removed the bottem pulley supposed mechanic freind of theirs lol... and in the how to section the 1.6 tbelt replacement id different to our car again... i dont think we have to remove our powersteering pump ( its in the timing area on the grath) well i certainly cant see it gettin in the way as i have half the engine appart and the powersteering has not been touched.. i think the nubira is a bit superior to the lanos in the way of access to certain things i must say its a pleasure to work on compared to other things i have played with in the past.. now im just buying bits and peices to get it on the road.... need to get this cylinder head i have bought tested and smick for fitment(repairing the old head was not an ecconomical option) like 700 bux what are peoples veiws on gettin new headbolts never done it before my mechanic that i deal with seid i should but the manual ses simply clean the and use em again

nubira88,

I don't have a camshaft posistion sensor on my Nubira either. I believe it depends of engine management. When present this sensor is between the cam gears and there is some wiring harness under cover barely in the yellow circle.

On this engine I don't have to remove the PS pump like on the 1.6 Lanos to have the T-belt replaced. That's the engine support bracket that must be removed.

Since I've never found a full compatable service manual (in french or english) for my Nubira I have to work with a mix of Lanos & Nubira manuals. Even for wiring.

You're right about head bolts. The manual don't ask for new one. But how do you check that they were not stretched? It's so low cost to be on the safe side.

Yeah we have the same engine..... yeah was thinking of buying the headbolts. jus seein if anyone else has had and experiences with these... i got the nubira manual on ebay australia for 9 dollars it covers lacetti aswell so who knows we may have the same manuals as rare as lacettis are(here)i have seen one and i dont think it would have a 1.4 bit underpowered id imagine so it must be lanos :? whats your car like powerwise anyway? mines a manual i should imagine it would be ok
