Lanos Engine Starts but then dies out
Hey guys,
I swapped out my tail lights in my Lanos for the 2001+ newer style lights this weekend. I had started the car several times to test the lights to make sure they were working as they should. Everything went fine. I cleaned everything up and locked it up.
The next day I get in it to run to the store. Turned the key and it started but then died out. Tried it again, several times. Same result. I checked all the fuses, none blown. I check the spark plugs, they all seemed fine. I removed the air filter thinking maybe it was blocked up but this didn't fix it. I was going to remove the exhaust at the first catalytic converter to see if that was backed up but the bolts are rusted on tight. This was much easier when I had air tools. I hear the fuel pump switching on so I know it's not a fuel issue. Plus the engine turns over for a second which implies it's getting fuel and spark.
My suspicion is that the exhaust is blocked and it's suffocating the engine.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I would think that the engine wouldn't start if it was the fuel filter. It will start for a second but then dies out.daewoomofo wrote:how old is the fuel filter? ive had lawn mowers do the same thing when there was a clog in the fuel system.
Today I'm going to remove the Throttle Body, clean it out real good and test the sensors.

Update:
Well I tore the throttle body apart cleaned it up and hooked everything back up and it didn't fix the problem. However it did run a little longer than it did before. So I sprayed a little more TB cleaner in the throttle body and it ran for about 20 seconds and died out. So this is pointing to a fuel problem now.
My next step is replacing the fuel filter. Anyone remember if there were any special tools required?

I got a fuel filter for under $10. Plan on replacing it tomorrow.

ugh well the fuel filter was a pain in the @$$!
On the one end it had the little plastic clips that you press in to release the line.
On the other end it had one of those round plastic 'quick release' (haha yeah right) tabs to release this end.
I pushed down on the 'quick release' tab and it fell apart leaving me with no way to release the clips inside.
I ended up having to cut the filter off with some sheers and shove something down inside to release the clips.
After all that, it still didn't fix the problem. UGH.
So I'm lead to believe it's either the fuel pump (which I will test tonight) or the ECU.
Any suggestions on upgrades to either of them? I would like a better fuel pump with intentions on doing further performance mods. I would also like Perfect Power SMT6 for the ECU but I need more info on it.
Any help is appreciated.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but they suggest you replace it everytime you replace your air filter as part of a full tune up.xiaogary wrote:How often do we need to replace the fuel filter?
Does anyone have a hook up on getting fuel pumps? If mine's bad (I'll test tonight) I'll need to get one right away.

Yeah they're all plugged in. Tomorrow I'm going to replace them. Luckily I have two other throttle bodies in storage.greenbluewoo wrote:check the sensors on your throttle body see if all of them are connected because one of mine was unpluged and my car would start then die and after i pluged it back in everything was fine hope that helps
I tested the fuel pump and it's working, which is good cuz a new one was gonna cost me over $200USD.
Hopefully this fixes the problem tomorrow.

I'll be doing that tonight as well.daewoomofo wrote:chct your fuel pressure. even though the pump kicks on, it might be geting weak so it doesnt have the power to create the fuel prssure needed to run correctly
Here's some articles for anyone who need to know how.
