im looking at this car http://detroit.craigslist.org/cto/817083825.html
as you can see from the pics it has had the front part of the engine taken apart, the belt is still on there, looks to be origional, 107,000 miles on the engine. the harmonic balancer is off the car. i heard it run yesterday, wouldnt idle. i figured it was the belt slipped and bent valves. i got thinking about this today at work. if the belt slipped and there were bent valves wouldn it have been back fireing throug the TB or the exhaust? cause it wasnt. could the reason for the non idleing situation be from the balancer not being on it so the crank sensor couldnt do its job? i think i can get this car for $1000 or less. first thing i would do is a timing belt and all associated parts. its missing the second cat so i would straight pipe it. im gonna try to go look at it agian, see if i can rent a compression testing tool so i can see for sure if it has bent valves. does my theory about he balancer missing sound plausable? any help is greatly apreciated, thanks in advance!

Are you sure that the harmonic balancer is also used as a crankshaft position unit like on our 1.6 DOHC?
Looking at the Leganza parts manual it seems to be a transmitter disk (90265094 ?) directly bolted on the crankshaft inside the engine. But I can be wrong too.
Take compressions and maybe error code.
