Lanos running on 80 octane
hi guys
i was struck to know that some local guys here are using octane 80 in their brand new lanoses... one particular guy is using 80 octane in a 2008 lanos and drives it for some 200 to 250 kms per day and his feedback is:
car feels a bit more heavy to start moving from 1st gear
engine is a bit louder specially during warm up
no detonation whatsoever
frankly i am not buying this so i will meet one of them guys today and test drive the car myself... i recon he was EXTREMELY gentle with the gas pedal so he never experienced - or couldn't hear - it knocking
i know this is impossible to happen as i saw the settings on the octane plug and the lowest value was 83 and all our lanoses have a 87 octane rated plug so i don't know how can this happen
my only assumption is that this has got to do with the different engine management versions we have here (O2 sensor vs. potentiometer) and that car doesn't have an O2 sensor and it is "leaded fuel" ready and its ignition timing might be different or so and it can handle such low octane (O2 sensor versions are the only versions with the octane plug)
do you guys have any ideas how can a lanos run on 80 octane with no detonation or knocking???

comp ration in our engines is 9.5:1
i think Egypt is the only country in the world that still produces lanoses... a coworker just bought one brand new 2 weeks ago

I've never actually seen this 87 plug on either of my cars. I've seen photos, but I don't actually know where it is.
I've been told it's under the front passengers seat, near the ECU, but I've yet to locate it!
But why run it on 80?! Do they still have pumps that dispense 80 in Egypt? Most modern cars have to run on 85+ due to the catalysts and worldwide emission controls. I doubt 80 would cause it to knock, but it would kill power, and QUICKLY foul plugs, injectors, O2 sensors, and catalytic converters. Why doesn't he just run 87? Is the price difference that great?

the reason for this is purely financialBosnianLanos wrote:I've never actually seen this 87 plug on either of my cars. I've seen photos, but I don't actually know where it is.

a recent fuel price increase on both octane 92 and 90 triggered this new trend as one liter of 92 octane costs a bit over twice the price of one liter of 80 octane (1.85LE vs. 0.90LE)... hell a liter of diesel costs more than that in here (1.10LE) so people freaked out and tried 80 on all sorts of cars.
the government is still keeping the production of such low octane as we still have very old cars running on the streets (60 and 70 models) and they see that those people owning those cars are poor and should have the right to buy cheap, subsidized fuel... as if a daewoo owner is a millionaire or so... funny enough the government is still subsidizing 95 octane by some 50%... only rich ass guys buy cars that don't run on less than 95 so why the hell should they get such subsidy???
anyways we have here two engine versions for the 1.5 SOHC lanos and one of those doesn't have a catalytic converter or O2 sensor as it is designed to run on leaded fuel

i am still watching out for guys doing that and getting their feedback... so far it is all "louder engine and slower acceleration but no knocking"... will keep you posted and i will never do this to my woo

which models that have no O2 sensor??
my 99 lanos and my friend 2003 have ones. So which models are they?
and that lead to a very simple question what is the diffrence between lanos and lanos 2 1.5 L engines?
here in egypt the standard 1.5L engine in a 99 lanos are better than 2008 lanos (Have no idea why?)
quiter, more comfort , and more power
about the 2008 lanos . the lanos is already on production car here in egypt , Russia , and in another country in east europe ( I think romania ) but in russia it is under Chevrolet brand . and they even did a safety tests on it !!!!!. I can upload vedios on that

more and more guys are encouraged to try this... so far 3 more guys are switching to 80 and i am watching their feedback closely... strangely non of them experienced knocking!!!
hey nefary... long time no see bro

now the difference in engines is not between lanos 1 and 2... it is a difference within the lanos 2 version
the lanos 2 that came will all options have an engine that is similar to the one on the lanos 1... it has EGR valve, O2 sensor and a catalytic converter... it is the same engine like the one you have... also those engines got an octane selector plug right next to the ECU

the lanos 2 that came with A/C and PWR steering only - like my car - has an engine that is designed for using leaded fuel... no idea why is that since we don't have leaded fuel in Egypt but anyways... those engines has no EGR, no O2 sensor, no catalytic converter and they got a potentiometer adjuster
