2000 Leganza Engine Noise

Post by pondlily »

My 2000 Leganza with 75,000 miles on it has a loud rattle/knock noise from the bottom end of the engine when the car is cold. Once the engine warms up that noise goes away. There is still some valve lifter? noise but minor compared to what it is when cold.

I have had two shops tell me I need a new engine but neither one tells me what it is, i.e. rod, bearings, etc. The most recent one pinned the problem down to cylinder #3 and quoted me $4000 to remove, rebuild and replace the engine.

Is there any way to tell for sure what is really wrong with the car short of tearing the engine apart, or am I at the mercy of people who would love to sell me a new engine or a new car. Unfortunately I have no mechanical know how and don't know anyone who can help me with this.

Other work that has been done includes:
At 56,000 miles I had major warantee work done.
1. R&R oil pump - leaking
2. R&R water pump - leaking
3. R&R cam seal and crank seals - leaking

While they were at it I had them R&R timing belt, tensioners and pulley.
I have also replaced the head gasket and the radiator bypass hose.

The bottom of the engine? Could be the big end bearings gone.

Doesnt really explain why it goes away when cold. It wouldnt be the lifters if the knocks coming from the bottom. If it was the lifters, it'd come from the top of the engine, and would be more of a fast paced tapidy noise than a knock.

It's really strange that you had all of that fail at 56,000 miles. Did you keep up with oil changes?

But yeah, a loud knock/rattle is most likely going to be bearings, and that's not fun.

Just buy another engine from a junkyard or eBay (around $500 for one in good shape), pay the $1000 or so to put it in, and then sell your cylinder head and block (if it's not damaged) to offset the cost. Leganzas that had owners who neglected timing belt changes are a dime a dozen, and the market for a good cylinder head is high...you can probably make $200-$400 on that alone, depending on the buyer.

That's what I thought! and yes, I did regular oil changes. Thanks for your input. I think I'll see if I can find a good mechanic that will put an engine in for me.
