Probably the Cat..... it's not uncommon for that to happen.
As far as engines..... being in Australia gives you lots of choices.
The 2.5L V6 and 3.0L V6 are definitely interesting swaps..... anything you can do with an Astra MK2 ( or was it a Kadett E in Australia? ) you can do with a lanos.
The Lanos is basically a duplicate of your Holden Astra/Kadett...... you will find the engine bay to have identical dimensions..... so any swap you see for a GEN 2 Astra will work on the Lanos.
In the UK the most common is the C20XE and C20LET..... but there are a number of guys with the newer Z20LET and Z20LEH as well.
Personally... I think the 2.0L turbo is the best engine..... sure the V6 has more power stock but it's easy to push 300bhp out of one of the turbo 2.0L engines.
Do you guys have the newest high output Astra 2.0L turbo version in Australia ? ( Astra VXR in the UK )
It would be wild to see someone transfer the Astra VXR drivetrain over into a Lanos.
I already have an M32 gearbox ( 6spd from the VXR ) I imported it brand new from the UK last year.

Yeah, I want it to breath better, but I don't want it to be loud and droney.
We didnt get mk2 astras, the astra at that time in australia was based on the nissan pulsar, so at that time its possible for a sr20 astra
At the moment We have an Astra turbo that has a 147kw ecotec engine, is that the same as the vxr?
What about the engine in the viva/lacetti?

The third gen ( sold 96 on in australia ) also would work.... and yes... the Lacetti engine will work as well.... not sure about the viva... not familiar with that car.
I think you got the Epica as well... not sure which engine you got in that.... here is was a 6 cylinder..... perhaps in Australia you had a 2.0L version as they did in a few other places.
Yes..... the 147Kw Ecotec from the Astra turbo is the one I'm talking about.... that will drop into your Lanos with a bit of work ( same 2.0L iron block ecotec )
The newer non turbo astra's might have the 1.6L or 1.8L engines.... not sure what they came with in Australia..... but they will fit as well.

yeah lacetti and viva are the same.
We have the epica 2.0L straight 6 and thats what i was talking about earlier in the thread, it comes in diesel as well and i was just sayin how crazy it would be to have an oiler lanos
A transverse mounted straight 6 diesel lanos.... sure would be unique
At the moment i think i'd be more interested in upgrading the brakes, but that 3rd gen astra wouldnt have the same rear end, would it?
Im just starting to think it would be so much easier here just to start with a different platform.
If i was off this stupid restricted license it would be different but i just dont see the point of doing anything until i can without it being illegal.
At the moment, priority is fuel consumption
thats why i want to get this exhaust sorted out. I cant afford to have the little lanos be as thirsty as a car with double or even triple the performance around town.

Yes.... I'm pretty sure the Gen 3 Astra rear end is identical to the Lanos.
The one thing I noticed is that the hubs on the Astra are welded onto the trailing arm suspension where as the Lanos has the hubs bolted onto the suspension.
I believe that there are other rear brake setups that will simply bolt into the existing rear trailing arm.
I never got around to taking it all apart and measuring.... perhaps this summer I will see about the compatibility between the rear hubs on a Lacetti versus Lanos ( since both hubs are bolt on style they might be compatible )
I also wanted to look into the Saab rear end.... which is the Vectra platform.... as they also look like they have a bolt in rear hub..... which would be nice if one wanted to convert to rear disks.
I know that there is a limited number of Saab models that have a similar front suspension.... I was going to get into that at some point as well.

Hey precision,
I was stopped behind a viva at the lights the other day and from my POV it looked like it had an independent rear set up.
Seeing that you have a Lacetti, I was wondering if i saw correctly or i just couldn't see properly.
If thats the case, would that affect compatibility.
How bout fitment of say, nubira parts?
Also a question for Jeff, when you said in another post that a blocked exhaust would hiss, did that happen to you and if it did, did you fix it?
Thanks all
