00' leganza with BAD oil leak

Post by hillbilly woo »

Hello, first I must say great forum! I just purchased a 00' leganza for 400 bucks. I was told it needed an engine. It has 94 thousand some miles on it. I hauled it home and charged the battery and it fired right up. I let it run maybe 10 seconds and it sounded fine. But as soon I shut it off, I could hear the oil spewing on the floor. I bet it poured at least a quart out. I couldn,t figure out were it came from so I started it again and let it run another 5 seconds and same thing. At least another quart on the floor. Its coming from around the oil filter, oil sending unit area. I took the oil sending unit off and it looked fine. It didn't look like the oil was coming thru it. I also took the oil filter off and put a different one on it. I took the timing belt and shield off to see the block and the oil pump better. I cannot see anyplace the oil was coming from. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

welcome to the forum... :D

check one more area by the sending unit, it's the area circled here.

there are two pluds there (used for tuebo feed on factory turbo models). I've never seen or heard of these leaking on there own but it's possible. what it really sounds like is an oil pump leak, perhaps the gasket. the worst case would be a cracked block but I've only ever seen that once from an early 80's block. good luck, hopefully it something simple like a plug that backed out.

at any rate, if you do have to replace the motor, make sure you try and sell it here. I woulfd at least buy the head to help you offset the cost o fthe motor.

Thanks for the post. I checked those plugs and they weren't leaking. I'm starting to wonder if it is the oil pump gasket because it looked like the water pump is leaking and I wonder if its ate the oil pump gasket up? Its hard to believe that much oil could gush out of it in that short of time. Thanks for the reply.

makes pretty decent sense though, right under the water pump is where the high pressure oil is fed from the pump into the motor. it would have taken a very long time of neglect but if the water eat up the gasket there you would be getting oil pumping out at around 40psi or so. :?
