Emergency! Need Lanos CPS Help!

Hey guys, I'm on vacation, and I think my Lanos CPS (Camshaft Position Sensor) has taken a dump. I drove the car for about 160 miles down to Captiva Island. About 30 miles shy of the destination, the car started to run funny. The power in gear was low, and I could not accelerate well. The car ran, but very poorly. If I let it go down into first gear, like at a stop. I would get it back into gear and catch it, but I could not accelerate. It would take effort, AKA lots of pushing on the gas pedal to get the car moving again. I managed to get it into the Captiva House, but upon trying to start it again, it wouldn't go. I let it sit overnight, and after some trouble, I got it on and in the garage. Today, upon trying to start it again...I couldn't. It would act like it would want to start, but it could never fire up. I unplugged the CPS (Camshaft Position Sensor), and the car started right up, and ran fairly stable. It would bog in lower RPM, but at higher RPM it runs fine. I'm nearly certain it is my CPS, but I'm at a beach house with no tools and no way to diagnose. There is also no car repair place on the island that would come out and help me. Furthermore. I need to head home on Sunday and would like to solve this before then!

So basically, my question is. Does this sound like a CPS issue? A friend at the house with me says it's nearly identical to what happened to his car. Also, will a CPS from any GM car (Aveo, Reno, Forenza) fit the Lanos? I have no hope in hell getting the OEM Daewoo part down here in time, so I need anything that would help.

Hopefully the Daewoo tech "John" in Compton has set you on the right course by now.

But here (for what it's worth) is what i think

I would-a thought you would get a CEL for a bad cam pos sensor ?
If you have had the valve cover off recently, there is a possibility that the Cam-pos-sensor wires running out of the cover got pinched. It's easy to do that when the cover gets re-installed. I know this for a fact.

Hopefully, if you can find a GM dealer locally and talk to one of the experianced mechanics? That person could probably tell you if the AVEO is the same CPS as the Lanos 1.6.. I would think it would be but don't know for absolute sure.
If you find out it is? And you can get one at a reasonable price. Do that, because you dont need but a few tools to change one out. And than if you still have the same problem you have eliminated the question " is it the cam pos sensor?" and...you will have an extra one.

(Hope that is not the case)

Someone friendly around there must have a tool box. (make a cardboard sign that sez: "Help ! need to borrow/rent a couple of tools for an hour" Than stand next to your woo (with the hood up) and you shurely will get the help you need.

Hope your woo problem gets resolved soon. In the meanwhile you might as well enjoy that island your on.
Sounds like a great place to be and much nicer than 108 degrees outside and in the middle of a dusty desert where even the jackrabbits are carrying canteens today.

CPS from an aveo would work fine on a lanos

Thanks for all the help guys. I managed to find a Lanos CPS at an Autozone about 40 miles away, but that wasn't the issue. After all was said and done, I tried to crank the car, and it wouldn't turn over... Nothing I could do. I had to call AAA to have my car towed down to a local garage that I had found. It now sits there, waiting to be diagnosed in a couple of days. I had to make it home because I couldn't miss any more time from work.

I talked to the place...and it looks like they want to charge me full list prices for the parts, because, as the owner said "I need to make money." I told him I could provide anything he needed, but he says that he won't use my parts. That SUCKS because A) The repair will be very expensive and B) The repair will take a lot of time while this douchebag waits for parts. I don't have any kind of choice...AAA Select tows up to 100 miles free...but that still leaves the issue of 65 miles + surcharge for driving the tow truck back. I FUCKING HATE auto repair shops...it always feels like I'm being cheated...even more so when I know that if I could get a code reader to the car, I could fix it no problem.

My guess is that it'll be about 2 weeks before I can get my car back to me, and upwards of $1000.

So yeah...nice bitter end to a really great vacation.

on this long 4th of july weekend rent a code reader adn drive one or your other cars down there, hook it up and fix it right there in the parking lot of the repair shop.

Got a call today from the shop owner. He was researching the timing belt installation, and he called me to complain that he needed the special removal tool, and he didn't want to buy one. I told him that he could either use a set of Channel Lock pliers or a 42 mm crow's foot wrench to rotate the water pump (we found that the timing belt was frayed, due to a rock hopping into the cover), but he said that he doubted it. He's going to start it "first thing on Monday" (meaning closing time Wednesday) and will call me if he runs into any issues. He say's that if he can't do it, that he might have to "side-step" the car and not even worry about it.

Pardon the rant, but I FUCKING HATE incompetent morons. How can you run a shop when you can't even install a damned timing belt on the simplest car?! I'm worried that he's going to botch the job, snap my belt, and bend all of my rods, throwing me into ALL kinds of trouble. The worst thing of it is that I'm completely fucking helpless. The car is 165 miles away, and I can't do a damn thing about it.

I spent the day talking to a friend (professional mechanic), and he'll organize it so that I can rent a tow-truck from one of his buddies for $200 and a tank of gas, and if he doesn't have the belt done by Monday, I'll call him, and tell him that he's worthless (in the most polite way, and that I'll be there that afternoon to pick the car up and tow it home. Should he attempt to charge me a DIME for anything, I'll involve my lawyer.

So yeah, that's my daily rant.

From now on, any lengthy trip, I'm renting a car...it's cheaper and easier in the long run.

if you have a pickup you can borrow why not get a uhaul car dolly and drive down there and take your damn car, from the sounds of it, this guy has the "its a daewoo, its not worth working on" attitude. tell this guy to fuck off and take your fucking car befor he kills it!

Well, we FINALLY have some answers. The timing belt was put back on, car was tested out, wouldn't start. Starter fluid was used, and the car ran again...until after it ran out, then it stalled...FUEL PUMP. Shop owner called me to tell me the "good" news. He then also offered to let me bring my own part and fix it myself in the parking lot. Which I agreed to, considering how easy the job is. Grand total for the TB job was a little over $300...which is something I can do. So hopefully, I get the car back Saturday.

A little over 300 isn't that bad...it cost me 150 in parts last time I did it.
