Hello daewootech.com,

please excuse my blatant and extreme noobness. Here it goes:

2001 Daewoo Lanos with approx. 58,000 miles, haven't been to a mechanic with this car since I bought it one year ago.

I noticed this broken hose on my engine. The coolant level is always dropping very quickly. I need to know what the part is so I can replace it.

The engine runs fairly smoothly but recently I have noticed that it feels shaky while in idle, and it accelerates slower than usual, while it sounds like it is revving harder than usual. Today I looked under the hood after hearing the coolant sizzling out the top of the coolant cap. The broken hose attaches to the top of the engine and to what appears to be the air filter/duct, or something.

Please help me diagnose the problem, I need the car to go to school and work!

hello there Daewoo Owner, the hose you are showing is your pcv hose. it does need to be fixed. you said you have about 58k miles on the car, i would recomend getting the timing belt, tensioner, idler and water pump replaced. the belt tends to snap when you reach over 50k miles so changing it and all of the associated parts will stop you from having to replace the head. where are you located? do you see any coolant on th ground after you park for a period of time?

Yup...that's your breather hose. You can get it from the dealer or just get a piece of silicone hose and do it yourself. It could be the cause of your shaky idle, but I don't think this would affect acceleration enough to be noticed. All it's meant to do is is to remove the gases created in the valvetrain and vent them into the intake. It is only there so that you don't smell the exhaust coming from the engine. But it is definitely a good idea to keep it there on a stock car.

It has nothing to do with your coolant.

Your coolant could be a leaky radiator, bad surge tank (tank where the cap is), bad cap, torn hoses, leaky thermostat, cracked heater core, or basically any part of the car's cooling system. However, at your mileage, I might venture a guess and say that it is a leaky water pump gasket.

Like daewoomofo said, check to see if there is coolant on the ground. If there is, not which part of the engine it escaped from and let us know, that could help pinpoint your problem.

Something that could be a potential issue, although I'm pretty sure this isn't it, is that you could have a bad head gasket. Water leaking into the combustion chamber could cause the shaky idle and bad acceleration...Check to see if there is any white smoke/steam coming out of your exhaust. If there isn't, your golden.

And yeah, for good measure, get your belts/tensioner/water pump changed. Parts will set you back about $120 and the labor is about $200. Take care of this, and this will most likely prolong the life of your 'Woo for another 50,000 miles, when you should do it again. These cars are strong, just be on top of maintenance!

Is $120 how much all the parts will cost, or just the timing belt?

Thank you daewoomofo, BosnianLanos, and Daniel for taking the time to check out the thread, I really have no clue when it comes to cars, and any help is appreciated.

I took the car to a mechanic yesterday and they told me it would be about $500 for just the timing belt. I live in Los Angeles, is this the average price it would cost to replace? Should I haggle with the guy? Should I tell him I want to take it to another mechanic who will do it cheaper? Does that even work in a situation like this? Right now I'm waiting on a call from the mechanic to let me know how much it will cost.

if this guy wants $500, and that includes parts and labor, i dont think that is too bad, i personally wouldnt pay it but thats cause i do all my won work. make sure he has experiance with daewoo's and havehim look here on this site in the how to section, there is a how to on timing belt change.

$500 for just the timing belt is ridiculous. Since you have to take off the Steering and AC belt to get to it, it would be a good idea to get those changed...it doesn't cost anything extra in labor, as they have to go off anyway.

http://www.store.partsdinosaur.com is a good website to start. You can get a power steering belt, AC belt, and Timing Belt for $89.80 SHIPPED. Keep in mind these are all Gates belts, the best on the market. You could get some cheaper stuff, but my best friend's dad is CIO of Gates USA...their QC standards and materials are excellent.

That would mean that the mechanic is charging you $410 for labor... @ $65/hr flat rate for mechanics, even with a water pump ($35)...I couldn't see the job lasting 6.3 hrs. Which is what he is charging you for.

I recently had all my belts changed for $175 cash. Took a total of MAYBE 3 hours, but granted, it was a friend of the family. My sister also had the belts changed on her Civic, and that was at a professional ACDelco shop, for $190. Waterpump, oil change, and a broken motor mount all cost her $420 all together.

If you are doing the belts alone, paying more than $300 parts and labor, is gouging.

Go to a few more shops, make sure they quote you for cash prices (if you intend to pay cash, which I think is a good idea) In most shops, cash transactions don't go on the books and you can get a better price.

My wifes Hyundai's t-belt and related parts were recently replaced at a shop up here in Bakersfield.
Hyundai=basically the same as Daewoo.
All the parts (even A/C and alternator belts) and labor total came to $250.00 USD

:)

P.S. The fumes not only smell. But as you know here in California with our strict emission laws your engine is in non-compliance and subject to fines, smog test failure ect.
