Warpped head and/or head
I need to determine if a 2001 Daewoo Lanos 1.6L engine is worth fixing. Son's wife blew the head gasket. They don't have the money to fix. So I have torn down the engine. The factory manual states that the tolerance, measured between No. 2 and No. 3 cylinder with a straightedge diagonally across the block, should be a maximum of .002 inches. I have tried several pieces of straight metal edges and have gotten different readings. The largest reading of .003 inches to the lowest at the maximum of .002 inches. So is the block considered wrapped and in the need of being machined? Or is it within the limits of just replacing the headgasket and calling it good? I am looking for any solutions short of having to pull the engine. I'm already into it for $100 in tools. It will take another $300 in parts (headgasket, water pump, timing belt, tensioner, etc.) to put it back together. If it comes down to pulling the engine it will go to the auto junkyard. Hope someone can help me in making a decision.

I would start by buying a straight edge that is intended for this from a comercel or perfeshional type parts store. Autozone, Checker and the rest are nice and all but a parts store that supplies the perfesionals is the best bet.
when you have the straight edge measure it from all four sides of the straight edge. if there is a bow of any type then you should be able to get an average that is quite a bit more accurate.
also check the head and see if it measures the oposite. if they are both .002-.003 in the middle (.004-.006 total) than you will need machine work.
worse case PM kinkyllama or myself, we are both looking for project cars. and I'm sure one of use will give atleast the same as the wreckers for it.

Kinkyllama - Sorry the 2001 Daewoo Lanos is a 4DR sedan. A decision has been made given the latest tests. The engine block is .004 inches, thus .002 inches above the maximum. The head is cracked. The coolant running thru the exhaust probably has ruined the oxygen sensor and damaged the catalytic converter. Son is going to decide whether to part it out , sell the whole car for parts or sell auto junkyard. Car not worth fixing. I'm really not unhappy about it. This was the most difficult car I have ever worked on. I'm an old school mechanic and out of touch with modern cars. Thanks for your help gse turbo.
Options ?
Sounds like you just want to get rid of it.
If you do decide to repair it? It is not an impossible/expensive undertaking.
If you have the skills to pull the head. You must have the skills to put one on?
02 sensors don't cost much. Cat is probably ok. Used parts (from a wrecked car) are an option.
I am "old-school" myself. My Lanos engine snapped a t-belt at 110 thousand miles and repair was way to expensive (for me) to consider.
So, I bought a good used engine for $400.00 (it was from a wrecked car) swapped it into my Lanos. That was a year ago (12 thousand miles) and I feel like I have a new car.

THE FINAL CHAPTER. The 2001 Daewoo Lanos 4DR Sedan 1.6L DOHC with Automatic Transmission is For Sale as an excellent parts car. The whole car goes as is. The body has no damage other than grocery cart and car door dings and no rust. I placed the head back on the block. The rest of the engine parts are in boxes in the trunk. We are asking $500.00 or best offer. You have to come get it. I live in Reno, Nevada. If interested post a reply. Again thanks for everyones help.
