Hydrolocked engine.....
So my brother called me yesterday and said ''Remember when you told me to be careful and not drive into ponds because I could mess up the engine...well...guess what.."
Apparently the engine hydro locked.. Im guessing he sucked up water through the intake since I had a cai with the filter extending into the fenderwell .... but I also think he messed up some electrical stuff because he told me the lights were not working either.
I had dental surgery yesterday so I wasn't able to go look at the car (he left it over his gf's house). I read that sometimes, if you are lucky, you can take off the plugs and crank the engine and water will spurt out...Either way my mechanic is closed till Monday so if theres anything I can check or do before towing the car to the shop I would love to hear about it...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope the engine is not dead ///that would be the end of my leggy
thanks guys

when i hydrolocked mine i did exactly what you said but before i did i took an air gun a blew out the cylinders from the plug oils, then i put engine fogging oil in each cylinder before i turned it over, then when i started it, i sprayed the fogging oil in the intake for a bit, before i did all of that i turned the engine over by hand at the crank pulley to see if it was free and no grinding!! 80 000km later still running fine, no smoke.my lights weren't working either because water hit my head lights( the bulbs) and they were on and nice and hot, so they blew up!!!!!! just needed new bulbs!!!!!! hope this helps, when i hydrolocked my car i was stuck in water up too the headlights so my ecu got fried too, my floor was soaked,

Well the lights are working fine, its just that the battery was out of charge. I took out the plugs and there was definitely traces of water...cleaned them up and left them out to let them dry. Did the same with the cables. Jumpstarted the battery and all the lights started working, but the car wont crank....guessing its the starter??? Any other ideas? come on people...help keep one more woo on the road Either way, it will be taken to a mechanic sometime this week. I just keep on praying its hopefuly not extremely bad...

i forgot to tell the whole story, my starter blew up for some reason and when i got a second hand one, the selenoid was all rusted so i took it apart and cleaned the rust then it worked again, is the selenoid clicking when you turn the key????

Hey thanks for replying man. Well to be honest, I am not car savy so I cant tell you with 100% accuracy. When I turned the key all I could hear was a clicking, but I dont know if thats the solenoid you are talking about.
My brother's girlfriend's father (lol) took it to a mechanic today and my bro just told me that they said the engine was a goner....so I'm effed. I wish I had the space, tools, and most of all knowledge to be able to buy another engine and swap it in or simply rebuild this one and make it better than before. Unfortunately I have none of the above so I'm pretty much screwed...cause I'm guessing either of those options would simply cost too much at a shop.
I'll see if we take it to another shop either tomorrow or wednesday to have it looked at...who knows. This sucks. I know the leganza is not the fastest or most luxurious car out there. Hell, its not even that good for mpg and it has a bad stigma here in the U.S for being a woo. But still. My brother and sister loved that car. Its smooth on the highway and for the price you cant go wrong. Who knows...if I find another on the cheap my brother might end up with another leggy...
sorry for the long post I'm just kinda sad about losing a car an all....

if you hear clicking you might just need a better connection at the starter or you might need a battery. dont trust one mechanic. with woo's having such a bad rep he might have just said "a daewoo with a hydrolocked engine (turns key hears clicking)...well she is dead" get a friend or a friend of a friend that knows engines to honestly look at it. bosnianlanos hydrolocked his woo with no damage, he said after the fact that i hasnt ran this good in a long time.

yeah thats why I wanted to take it to the other mechanic. He's the only mechanic that I can use the word ''trust'' with, and even then with some reservations. But either way, he might not now about Daewoos and say the same thing as the other one. The sad truth about cars is that the only way to be 100% sure is to do things yourself, supposing you have tons of knowledge...
None of my friends know anything about cars ...otherwise I would be completely down to put in some labor and replace the starter to check if thats the case. How hard is it to replace it? I checked on ebay and found some for fairly cheap.... Unlike most people here I never grew up around any car lovers and the very, very few things I've learned so far have been through reading forums and repair manuals and stuff... And I started fairly late in the game. But hell, if anyone in this forum lives in miami and wants to teach me how to replace a starter (and earn a six pack in the process) Im down to learn. If its not that hard I'll just try it myself.

Ah what the hell. I ordered a starter from ebay and will replace mine and pray that it works. Maybe I'll get a miracle! lol...if my leggy comes back to life I'll treat it to something nice, like one of the phenolic gaskets from Daft Art or something. Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated

you only need streach armstrong arms to get around every thing, lol jk. i heard some one say its easier from bottem but i did it from the top, not too bad. do you have small arms or are you on the bigger side? reason i ask is cause you will have a easier time with skinny arms (like mine) no special tools needed. and if you just pay attension to what your doing and which wires go where you can do it no prob.
+1 to mofo,
Not sure about the Leganza but for the Lanos? I don't think you can even see the starter from underneath.
Topside is your best bet. Work from the transmission side.
Make sure your ground wire is disconnected at the battery before you begin. And you may even wanna remove the battery totally along with the surge tank. That will give you more room to work in. Box-end wrenches may be easier to use than a socket. Yes, a bent one is good.

haha i had to replace the starter on my leganza... wooow that was fun. i recommend jacking it up and putting it on some i forget what there called but the stands on both sides of the car like a couple feet up and working under it theres 1 bracket that will get in your way but its easy to get off 2 bolts, then you can get at the starter a little bit easier and i mean little bit lol it really is a bitch to get at it took me on the bottom and my dad working on top helping to get it out getting new one in is easier once you know where everything is. there is a random bracket on the stock starter that kinda blocks one of the bolts if yours has it take it off first saves some pain later and dont put it back on it does nothing. theres only 1 wire that i remember... im kinda tired tho and i think 2 bolts maybe 3. if you dont have metric socket wrench get one... if you havnt worked on your leganza before you need metric tools. i would deffenitly help you but im all the way in cali.
