Buying Daewoo Racer?Does it deserve?

Post by racerbg »

Hello,everybody! :D
nice to meet you,I am kiril from Bulgaria,a small country located in south-eastern Europe :D
I have just registered,I accidentally found your forum surfing the net.
I consider buying Daewoo Racer, and I want to hear what owners of this car think, does it deserve,is it expensive to keep the car, commonly found problems, etc.
The daewoo racers,spread in bulgaria,are mainly 1,5 single-point fuel injection/75 horse power,sedan version 4 doors,looking exactly the same as Opel Kadett E:

I hope you can see the pictures, they are from the german wikipedia
the racers available in Bulgaria, are produced in Romania, mainly 1993-1994.
what do you think of it?what are the differences from similar models, for example daewoo lemans?
racers used to be very popular cars among taxi drivers in Bulgaria, and are still used by policemen.
the price in Bulgaria is about 700-800 euro
and I have another question:there is daewoo nexia engine,1,5 75 horsepower ,sohc, one camshaft,8 valves-in cataloges it is given as multi-point fuel injection,However,it has the same characteristics as the engine used in daewoo racer, which is single-point fuel injection  so my question is:Is there nexia with single-point fuel injection engine?
Thank you in advance for your answers :D  ;)

No there's not a Nexia with SPI. All nexias were multi point. At least in the UK they were. There were only ever 2 different engines in a nexia, 1.5 16v, and 15 8v.

The daewoo racer is just a daewoo nexia, which is just a Vauxhall astra/Opel Kadett. So pretty much most opel engines will fit your car.

If you go for an opel engine, it'll not be expensive to keep the car, opel engines are very very reliable, very cheap for spares, and pretty good performance ways.

Comonly found problems - Arse of the car lifts when cornering, all mk2 astras do it, so, all Nexias/ Racers do it too. Rust, sills, arches, rear pockets, comon place for the car to rust. Not sure about those engines, never played with an SPI from a Daewoo..

One other problem i've noticed with these cars because of a friend is, they seem to rip the bulk head when you lower them. The steering arm is boltedf to the bulkhead via 2 brackets and these brackets actuall tear away from the bulk head etc, and handling can get ropey. Strengthening the bulkhead around the steering arm while the engine's out is advisably for longevity.

thank you for you quick answer :D
actually,as far as I can hear, the assembling is poor-but this is understandable-because racers have been assembled in Romania  :D
the engine is very good,as it has some special covering-fluoropolymer/teflon,which decreases the wearing-but I know nothing more about it-this covering must have been put to all Daewoo engines from that time, including nexia/espero/tico
about the rust-yes,it is great problem-but I think I can cope with it.

and finally-bulkhead-you mean the car bottom?
I have heard of taxi drivers in Bulgaria, whose racers are on 1 400 000 km.
ooff,I need to go in bed,in Bulgaria it is already half past midnight :D
excuse me for my spoilt english-I used to miss my english classes when I was younger

Nope, i meant the 'Firewall'.
The bulkhead is the part of chassis behind the engine, seperating the engine from the cabin. The part your steering arm and brake master cylinder is bolted too.

They're a good car. It's just an astra as i said, but their biggest flaw is actually rusting tbh. They seem to rust from the inside out, but that can be treated with some grease or seem welding etc. Nothing too bad. My Nexia is pretty far gone with rust, so i know first hand :smt101

I'm even looking for a new Nexia so i dunno, they must have done something right to make me want another one after what happened my last one lol.. There's pictures on my Members cars and specs post. The thread's called 'Scuff'

I am Georgi also from Bulgaria. I am not sure about the Racer but if you can get hold of Lanos you will be much better off.
I own one and I am very happy with it. It needs just proper and regular maintanace.

Good luck
