I live in Washington State, USA and a about 6 months ago the timing belt went on a friends 1990 Pontiac Lemans 4 door and he simply gave it to me not knowing what was wrong with it, i ended up repairing it considering the engine had just over 100k miles on it and i drove the car for a few months and then i got into a car accident and totalled the car it was a total bummer however since the car wasnt worth enough to turn a claim in on my insurance i simply kept the car thinking that it wouldnt be a total loss if i could part out the car untill the other day i was looking through the paper and i found a single owner 1990 2dr pontiac lemans in nice condition with a blown engine
i was curious about swapping the engine they both have the 1.6L fuel injection engines, however the good engine is mated up to a automatic and the blown engine is mated up to a 5 speed, i wanted to keep the 5 speed and ditch the auto however from what ive heard some times the automatic is controlled by the ECU and the engines wiring harnesses would be different and potentially incompatable with out a mess of rewiring i was curious if this would be an issue in my case, also i was curious if there is any thing else that i should do with the engine out of the way
oh and the good engine has an a/c compressor i wanted to make sure i added that, it will obviously be removed before i put the good engine into the good car
im hoping this will be an easy swap because i would love having a hatch with good gas mileage if any one has any pointers that they could give me or any recommendations of things to replace while the engine is out of the way feel free, i dont have very much experience with these cars considering my first one was crashed so soon after i got it running again, so if any one has any pointers on things to look out for or maintenance it would be greatly appreciated
also if any one might want any parts off of the 4 dr let me know im sure i could figure some thing out
thanks in adv guys
Advice on a motor swap

The engine harness should be really easily swapped, it's pretty much plug and play. It runs from inside, from the loom through the bulkhead [through a rubber grommet, to the outside of the car.. the engine bay] then it's pretty much plugging in the connections and the big block connecter beside the coil.
At least that's how it is with the mk2 Astra's over here, so i assume it'd be the same in the lemans.
As for the other car being an auto, you'd also have to change the gear stick? To a manual one. The ecu shouldnt be a problem if you change the engine harness. I assume there would be an ecu with the other car anyway.
If the engine harness needs changed the easiest way to do it would be to leave everything attached to your engine. Unplug the connector at the ecu, and take it out that way. so then all you're doing is sliding the engine back in, fully wired up and all you need to do is pass that ecu connection through the bulkhead and stick the ecu in. ofc you'll need to unplug the big block connector but that's simple enough.
Personally, i'd take the air con out and leave it out. Done that with every daewoo we've done a swap in so far. Then again I live in Ireland where we're lucky to get above 20 degrees celcius in the summer :b
Im not sure if anything else needs changed, or if the engine harness even needs changed with the auto to manual swap.

hmm so changing the wiring wouldnt be that hard? and the manual ECU should work with the engine that previously had a auto mated to it? just double checking
also is there any thing apparently wrong with these engines, while i have the engine out of the vehicle is there any reason to take the oil pan off and check the oil intake or any thing else? or are these 1.6L engines pretty reliable when it comes to the internals? i was thinking i should probably replace most of the hoses, the clutch and the motor mounts while im at it too, any one know of a good place to get all these parts? dealer ships are often expensive and i was reading that parts for this car are kind of hard to find....
